Great pics thanks. Imagine how nice this would connect with downtown if 35 were buried.

Thanks! I kept thinking the same thing driving down that stretch... If only 5th street could continue seamlessly across Interstate. Hopefully that is in the long-term plans with the trenching of 35.

One of my favorite things to imagine. Reconnect Austin! Looking at the buildout, the zoning war to get here seems so ridiculous. These could have been much taller yielding more homes and jobs next to transit, more money for Cap Metro and more tax base for the city. Will never forget one of the most vocal opponents uttering, "No amount of affordability is worth this height". Mind you the height, with the small exception of the 125' office building, was a mere 70'. This entire site could have been 250-300' and made all the sense in the world. It also could have helped us with the push to reconnect 5th St. Oh NIMBYism...

East Austin is probably the best example of something particularly impressive happening in several emerging districts in Austin. The building of dense full-block development nearly from scratch that are totally remaking the neighborhoods. Probably the best execution of this of all the booming sunbelt cities.

Haha yes, I was especially struck by this photo below. It looks like an otherwise normal urban city block is briefly interrupted by an unexplained grassy hill

I wish there was a way to get some variety instead of these sterile block-sized mid rises with the same usual suspect corporate chains filing the retail spaces on the street.

How many Orange Theory fitness, juice bars, and Chipotle's do we need?

It's impossible for local flavor to compete with these corporate-owned, wall street backed, block sized buildings' lease rates.

$15 burgers and $9 smoothies gets old real quick.

Like I've said before, we desperately need minimum height thresholds in this city..

The new version reminds me of a self storage unit you would see on the frontage road of I35.

Saw a demo permit for the car wash and small strip center with Bufalina and the hair place on 1500 block of C. Chavez. Anyone know what is going in there?

Heh, I love the mid-century throwback feel. ALthough the palm trees make it feel a bit too "California."

Well after other places in Texas, California and Florida are the top contributors of domestic migration so it makes sense from that perspective and the fact that people often seek familiarity.

Austin and indeed a good chunk of Texas has always had palm trees so its not unusual in the slightest. I have a tall California in the front yard and a native Texas Sable Palm in the back that has a huge canopy. You can even find native palms along the hike and bike trail.
