It would be nice to see a concerted effort to make it look better. Even just a long-term plan to guide planning decisions around there would be nice. Winnipeg will never be Paris but surely we could at least make those few blocks of Memorial look good and suitably grand. The new WAG building is a big improvement, but there is more that could be done:
-Fix the low hanging fruit like the light fixtures, street furniture and such. It wouldn't really take much, just make it look consistent, put up some nice banners (not just the hand-me downs from Ottawa), that kind of thing.
-Improve the northern side of the Legislative Building grounds. The south side got a nice touch-up for Manitoba 125 in 1995 and it still looks good today, but the main northern side is still kind of lame. The province redid the steps and built a ramp which is good, but the landscaping could be better. The grounds will never truly shine until they get rid of the parking but I don't expect that to happen in my lifetime.
-Vaughn Street Jail needs to be repurposed, but at least it's still there.
-This is out of the province's control, but The Bay Parkade is maybe the single biggest blemish on the mall... seeing a nice new building go up there would really improve the area's appearance.
It would be nice to eventually see some development on Osborne St. N. I don't think anything new has gone up along there since the GWL/Canada Life offices sometime in the early 80s.
I'm glad that at least Memorial Blvd. itself was fixed up... it was in such a shambolic state before that it was getting a little embarrassing.
