Yeah I remember that, and all the hookers and drug dealers that hung around just outside until they were pushed over to East 11th. I wonder where they are now?

Yep. I remember that. Waiting at that traffic light and seeing people standing around outside and not quite being aware of what they were up to. My brother and I would go downtown with our dad and his friend and wander around downtown at night going to the Amtrak station, the Capitol and walking the streets and even the alleys. My dad had a friend who lived in the house where the Great Outdoors plant nursery is on South Congress, and there were always hookers outside on the street. Her driveway went way down the hill, so you can't really see the street from there. If you've ever been there before, you know what I'm talking about. I don't really remember us ever being bothered while walking around downtown. That was in the late 80s and early 90s. I do remember us finding a guy asleep in a dumpster once, which kind of weirded me out.

Ah, that must have been the crane I saw. I knew there was a crane working at Bowie, but last weekend while at my brother's house, I saw a tower crane off in the distance in South/Southwest Austin, and I couldn't figure out where it was exactly. This had to be it, which is impressive since I was 6 miles away. It was clearly visible even at night.

feel worse for the poor kids who'll have to lug around a hopper to pick up stray tennis balls all around the parking lot after practice

What difference would it make between tennis courts on top of a parking garage vs tennis courts on the ground?

Surely the courts will be fenced in so I doubt they will have balls flying off the garage.

In fact clearly in the rendering it's fenced in.

On a side note, that's a lot of tennis courts!

i played tennis in high school and we managed to loft quite a few balls over the fence, even without what I assume would be windier conditions on an elevated structure.

The school was fine. The parking was questionable.

Remember, that school was designed with the City, SOS, and other entities were sticking their noses in it. Open hallways to save on energy. Odd parking lot because of drainage and recharge zones.

Suprised nobody has posted this yet. I'm kinda laughing at this dude Cantu though. Really dude? We don't need industrial near neighborhoods for goodness sake. Take that crap out of here. Better jobs will be coming.

Better jobs? What about people who need regular jobs because that’s all they’re qualified for?

What I'm saying is this change gives the area a needed injection and opportunities for people for something that pays better. Let's face it, that Industrial area is a remnant of what it was and that's taking into account that Austin was never really an industrial city to begin with. The area is run down, it wouldn't hurt to bring some new life into it. Would you say the same for the Domain/Burnet corridor? or any area within the city that has remnant pockets of old commercial or industrial zoning which are well past their peak? Why is it okay for those areas to change and not this area?

You know how few people are employed in a single warehouse?

Especially if it is freight only and not individual pick and pack?

A few warehouses of that small size are not going to be employing many people, and are jobs that are better suited for outside of town for a number of reasons.

I think most of the South Austin industrial places are moving east along 71. That includes South Austin Machine Shop, auto salvage, mechanics, etc.

Honestly I feel like the St. Elmo Market project has already turned the tide for this neighborhood away from industrial uses. Add to this the fact that it is the only locale in the immediate area with large blocks of land that can be redeveloped for higher density housing and overlaid with a street grid. In the neighborhoods to the west and south, the streets are laid out in a far more suburban, hierarchical manner, and with entrenched, single-family-oriented residents.

1) there are plenty of jobs for regular people.....starting at $12 at PTerry's.....entry level construction is $20/hr...zero experience. These jobs are literally EVERYWHERE. I've had 2 friends have to close their restaurants due to the fact they could not find/keep employees.
2) I don't buy "all they are qualified for". People can and do learn new skills or seek new opportunities to improve their lot in life. No matter who you are, what your situation is, you CAN improve yourself. This way of thinking is classism...the poor/unskilled will stay that way because that's all they can do.
3) When I attended UT in the early 90's, every bus boy I knew was a college student (myself included) and many waiters had degrees. We all hoped better jobs would come to town so we could move on from waiting tables.....great jobs are always great. Trust me, you don't want a town that is not adding new great jobs.....it sucks. Sure rent was cheaper, but we also didn't make any money....it's all relative.
