IDK - I think having a grand plaza around a round (actually, I prefer oblong) tower that is stacked with ground level retail would be really nice. It'd provide a break in the monotony of the street grid and create a unique space.
Ofcourse, I'd prefer that there just be one or two of these unique spaces, with the rest of downtown conforming to the grid (because they wouldn't be unique if everyone was doing it!).
