The Emily Carr University is moving their main, if not entire, campus to the false creek flats area.

Groundbreaking is expected to be within the next four years.

Not really a rumour it's been known for years, although there still isn't the funding in place to make it happen, it's all part of the larger Great Northern Way Campus, which is a joint venture with UBC, BCIT, Emily Carr and SFU. They are still a long ways away unfortunately as they've restarted the planning process from scratch.

I had no idea what thread to post this on, and it's definitely not a rumour, but I thought it was neat. I keep seeing these Samsung Olympic ads that show this quasi-Vancouver-mega-skyline - apparently the real one didn't quite make the grade?

Sorry for the low quality pics (mine, feb 17)

Yeah, I noticed this too... seems that they've got the Kingsway corridor pegged for some 700-800'ers??? (lol)

I also like how BC Place has been relocated. Guess Kerfoot bought it from Pavco, overinflated it with helium and floated it over to the tracks.

Why on Earth would you spend what was probably thousands of dollars to create a fake Vancouver skyline for a Samsung ad?

Marketing department gone crazy?

Yeah, you're right... it essentially is a fake skyline (not just enhanced).

The Lions Gate Bridge doesn't seem to have towers, and the north shore is scattered with trees and snow. Hmmm...

Whole Foods has secured a site downtown for a new store. I don't know whether it's backfill or new build (can't imagine a 50,000 sq. ft. back fill though). I have no idea on the timeline, nor what area downtown it may be. It's here and not the Retail thread because I'm not sure I believe it myself, regardless of who I heard it from.

That would really surprise me. I have yet to see the Cambie store busy enough to justify the huge space. I think they put way too much food out and keep it out for too long -- especially their fish.

Also, I once bought one of their pumpkin pies, got it home and saw some mold.

Having said that... I like the store. Just think they should have made it smaller and scaled back their fresh offerings. Nothing worse than 'not fresh' being presented as 'fresh.'

Since Whole Foods owns the Capers/Whole Foods on Robson, is there really enough market demand for another Whole Foods store in the downtown peninsula? I doubt it.

That place is so expensive for nothing. They offer the same stuff else where for half the price or even more then half like at No Frills.

I'd bet they'd close the Capers if they opened another store.

I can't imagine it being 50,000 sq ft though.

Is that upstairs retail space at The Ritz still available?
It's 2 blocks from Urban Fare (in two directions) but that space may fit the bill. Can't think of another space that large downtown.

I suppose they could open a two storey location at L'Atelier - but it wouldn't be 50,000 sq ft.

It is what it is. No one concerned about money goes to Whole Foods for their everyday grocery shop (hell, they may not even go in at all). But there are certain things there you don't find at Capers or Urban Fare. Their take out food is amazing. Their floral section is better than any other grocery store, and rivals many florists (for content, not price). I find their produce to be fantastic, and I've seen things there I've never seen any other grocery store (specialty places like Kin's or even T&T not included).

Every time I've been to the Cambie location it has been pretty busy, the Park Royal location is rammed all the time. I've been told their Park Royal location is an anomaly with regards to its size (33k sq ft) and only did that deal because they needed to be in West Van and Larco wouldn't give them any more space. The Cambie location (57k sq. ft.) is much closer to their proto size, and when I heard they had secured a downtown location it was said to be a full size store.

Still, I don't really know where they'd go downtown, and they supposedly won't consider a deal unless the average household income of the area isn't $100k or above, so I'm not sure anywhere downtown meets those parameters.

I heard about this a couple weeks ago and didn't to post it. But the rumor thread needed a little life.
