That's a statement of personal opinion, not fact. People, especially in this neck of the woods, have had US centric images, ideas, beliefs drilled into them since birth. People from other parts of the world and younger generations have vastly different inputs. They don't worship or idolize the same things.
That argument about pre-War skyscrapers doesn't hold up either. They're absolutely impressive but their existence isn't enough to cement a skyline's position indefinitely. If it was, skylines like Detroit and Cleveland would still be regarded as better than Sydney or London. A skyline also needs to continually add new layers decade after decade, If they don't they start looking stale. Eventually, it's these skylines that get downgraded for lacking architectural layering relative to others that have kept building the whole time.
After not looking at the Chicago skyline much the last 3-4 years I was surprised by my reaction to it when I had another look last month. It's still a great skyline but it looked dated, stuck in time, and lacking modern layering. It's rested on its laurels for far too long and it's Chicago that's now missing layering. Continuing on its current path the Chicago skyline will fall further and further behind.
