Ookwemin Minising* | Waterfront Toronto l Park Open

*Ookwemin Minising, pronounced Oh-kway-min Min-nih-sing, is the new island's (created by the new Don River Valley) name meaning “place of the black cherry trees” in Anishinaabemowin/Ojibwemowin.

Many of the playground features, bike paths and trails of Biidaasige Park, located in the new 98 acre island of the $1.4 Billion Lower Don Lands Revitalization, opened this weekend revealing the stunning transformation of the formerly polluted industrial lands of the Portlands. Already lush from all the plantings crews have done the past few years, the new river valley, ponds and creeks now teaming with life.

It does look good now that the greenery is in place.

The new park looks great, but I wonder how quickly it will be despoiled by thoughtless people. Already on day one, you can see off-leash dogs in one of the pics.

Toronto's Waterfront is becoming a true masterpiece. Endless km of parks and urban oasis. Unlike Vancouver, however, it is not just a cycle/pedestrian path but rather a fun, beautiful, interactive place to go for all hours of the day.

The billions spent on returning the Don River and Valley to it's original state is bringing wildlife and humanity back to the water's edge has been well worth it. Toronto will enjoy the most beautiful waterfront in NA and one of the most wonderful ones on the whole planet.

25 years ago Toronto's waterfront was atrocious but the city has been re-claiming it, bit by bit. This latest section is the jewel in the crown and truly transformative. There's really only one small bit of waterfront that needs desperate attention; the area by the ferry terminal.

I wonder where we go from here though. These days, 10s of thousands flock to the lakeshore on the weekend. With the downtown population continuing to spike, these places may get ruined by overcrowding/over use. Hopefully, Toronto can re-visit proposals like Rail Deck park without buildings covering a third of it. We're going to need every square inch of green space we can find.

Pinnacle One Yonge | 351.85m | 106s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini l SkyTower u/c

Right of centre: looking tall at around 80 storeys… with 26 storeys more and the crown levels still to come. Floor-plate tapering will become noticeable as it rises.

CIBC SQUARE | 241.39m | 50s | Hines | WilkinsonEyre l Phase 2 u/c

It rocks to live in one of the few non-stop skycraper construction cities on the continent (for nearly a decade). With 3 super-talls u/c at the same time, a 263 metre Frank Gehry scraper rising (with a super-tall sibling to follow) on King Street West
... and 2 dozen other 150 metre to 200 metre+ scrapers u/c and nearing completion... spoiled scraper geeks are thriving indeed.

Curtain-wall glazing starting to wrap around the Yonge side. The shortest of Toronto's 3 super-talls under construction... at a piddly 300.2 metres.

Looks like Lake Ontario is ready for snorkelling… and check out the density of downtown in the distance.
