Once again Downtown Austin's nightlife is under threat and this time it's WCC and Nate Paul's doing.

I've been a regular at all of these clubs since the very beginning. They have been apart of Austin's entertainment scene for over a decade. Now one man is systematically wiping out whole segments of Austin nightlife. What was a fairly active interstection is now dead at night. This is very alarming and I'm glad that it's being noticed by the press. It's extremely upsetting to me as well as the EDM scene.

If true...they may have been wise to pay their rents. We shall see in the coming weeks if this part is accurate.

This was unexpected. That's the Marriott tower crane.

Railyard condo project in downtown Austin hits the market
1 hour ago

By Shonda Novak, American-Statesman Staff

It’s a developer’s dream: Two unrestricted parcels in downtown Austin that could become a blank canvas on which to envision a large mixed-use project near both the Austin Convention Center and a commuter rail stop.

The dream could become a reality if a developer offers owners of the 112-unit Railyard condominiums a price they can’t refuse.

The Railyard was built in 1983 and spans two half city blocks at 201 E. 4th Street and 301 E. 4th Street. It is being put up for sale by the Railyard Condominium Owners Association in response to several unsolicited inquiries from developers.

That would be a blessing to those owners!!!! I hope it works for everyone.
We were sooooo warned not to buy there by Realtors 15 years ago because of quality of construction.
Anyone on there live there now and can verify?
Great way to get out and not deal with selling issues!

So, I wonder how they would be developed with San Jacinto splitting them. Two separate towers? Two towers connected with a sky bridge? No CVCs, so something special could get built here right next to the CC & CC Expansion. I can't wait to see how this unfolds.

Throw in the Great Unknown about the CC expansion, and this could be an interesting project to watch. With the CC expansion I would think it would be a major hotel.

Perry Lorenz, a downtown landowner and developer, said word around the local real estate community is that the Railyard received offers of more than $1,000 a square foot for the land, “which as far as I know sets a record for downtown dirt,” Lorenz said.

It's just flat out wrong what Nate Paul is doing. He is ruining nightlife in this city. There's gonna be more to come out for sure. I know the owners of Karma and Kingdom. I'm gonna try to get ahold of the owners of Karma next week.

It's sad to see DT so empty at night compared to 10-15 years ago.

I really hate to see clubs close as well, and I pretty much don't care for anything WCC has done. But 6th St and Rainey seem to be busier than ever at night. Are you equating the Warehouse District to "DT"?

It's of course a segment of DT, but it's not just the Warehouse District, Congress between 4th and 5th, 5th Street between Trinity and Lavaca, West 6th have less foot traffic at night than they did 10 years ago. Also I guarantee you that East 6th between Congress and I-35 is not how it was 10-20 years ago. I've been going out DT for 2 decades and East 6th is not on the same level by any means than it was back then. The only area that has increase is Rainey Street. Either way, nightlife is an important part of DT Austin, it's worth fighting for.

I lived in Austin for two years from '14 to '16, and even back then I remember the clubs around 5th/Congress and east of there as being the most mediocre arm of the downtown nightlife kingdom. In my own personal experience, Rainey, Warehouse, Red River, West 6th and Dirty 6th (in that order), all seemed to have much more to offer.

I agree that nobody wants to see the character and energy of Downtown Austin fall to developers, but the 5th stretch and the blocks directly abutting the CC are the most in need of reinvention IMO. If the higher-design venues of the JW Marriott, which opened while I was living there, and the conversion to the Line Hotel are any indication, there may be hope yet that major hotel presences could actually improve the area. Not to mention the increasing numbers of commuters coming through the area whom will be catered to by future development.

Also, I've always felt that Austin has plenty of room to grow and flesh out nightlife districts in areas adjacent to downtown and even further out in the city. This is already seen on South Congress and South Lamar, and in East Austin; and Rock Rose at the Domain and Aldrich Street at Mueller have demonstrated that these can be built from the ground up, and that Austinites across the city have an appetite for these places.

Austin nightlife is the furthest thing from dead, it's only just now reaching adolescence.

Let's not forget why an event such as SXSW was able to get started, grow and thrive here. It was because of the amount of entertainment venues in close proximity to eachother, litterally walking distance in a centralized core as opposed to being spread out. Not having to get into a car and drive from one place to another. It's one thing to have entertainment venues expand into other areas of the city, but to "flesh" them out of a centralized area where many people can easily move around from one to another not only reduces the options people have/had, it negatively impacts SXSW. I have heard organizers talk about this very issue just this year.

I don't disagree that the area immediately around the CC needs major improvement but the 5th/Congress down to Lavaca were far from mediocre. Those clubs played an important role for the local EDM Dance/Electronica scene and while we can get into a debate about size, or layout of some of these clubs, it comes down to personal taste in what you like to listen to. As I recall, we ran into each other a few times at those clubs for shows and whatnot. Also that area was much more active before you moved here. 10 plus years ago that area was the busiest in terms of nightlife door traffic outside of E.6th. West 6th is nowhere near how it once was. The only district that has grown and improved is Rainey and it didn't even exist as an entertainment district a decade plus ago.

I upside that I've heard is some good things are on the horizon for the local EDM scene.

The condos on 5th and in between Trinity and Neches (Austin Lofts?) can't be far off from being redeveloped either.

I remember, back in the day, when I said how much I hated the Railyard condos, someone here ripped me a new one for not appreciating how amazing they are.

If they do indeed get torn down then good riddance. They served their purpose but they're a huge eyesore in this day and age.

only difference there.... parts of those are kinda cool old warehouses. Would be interesting to see what their actual history is... or if there is a way to maintain some of them. When I moved here that was all covered in an old slipcover and was an old ACC campus.

But yes.... I think there is some innovative redevelopment to be done.
