Grand/Orleans

Does anyone know what the story behind the vacant eyesore at Grand/Ohio & Orleans?

Seems to have been vacant for a while now and is such an awful sight for anyone coming into the city from the Kennedy.

New 6-story building proposed for a parking lot (formerly used by a Church, which has since been converted to apartments) at Ashland and Leland across from Chase Park: https://www.uptownupdate.com/2024/05...l-parking.html. "96 rental units are proposed with a mix of 12 studios, 66 one bedrooms, and 18 two bedroom units with 35 parking spaces."

More info here: https://www.aldermanmartin.com/development

Seems to be a TOD based on distance to the Ravenswood Metra.

Pic from the article - lovely building, hope they are able to maintain as much of the original character as possible.

This is a great project; the Our Lady of Lourdes school next door is also being converted to 42 units. The convent south of the school was also converted into apartments, although they butchered the architecture That's 152 new transit-oriented apartments that could be coming to this corner. Ald. Martin also announced recently that the #9 Ashland bus will be extended from Irving Park up to Lawrence and over to the Ravenswood station with a new transfer. That'll be a nice new link connecting this new housing to Fulton Market jobs.

Unfortunately no word yet on the spectacular Lourdes church across the street, which is under threat after the Archdiocese closed it.

A few pics of the building from an article about the birthplace of Schwinn.

https://vintageamericanbicycles.com/...ld-schwinn-co/

Built in 1886. Timber rafters etc inside. Very cool.

Lincoln Square construciton

Its going to be a busy summer near the Western Brown stop with the above development continuing and the Western stop itself under construction for remodeling.

https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/06...n-this-summer/

Also the Leland Greenway is supposed to make some progress this summer too (fingers crossed).

^ plus all the new midrises on Lincoln Ave and Western Ave. The 5-mile upzone along Western + potential BRT will kick development in Lincoln Square and North Center into overdrive

^ if there is a Pizza God, that god-awful single-story auto-zone/dollar tree & parking lot on western just south of DANK Haus will be redeveloped ASAP!

Along with movement on the gigantic old bank property at NW Western/Lawrence.

Good things are happening in Lincoln Square, but there is so much room for so much more improvement. It's time the for the neighborhood to level up.

Oh yeah, and also that full-block shit-acular BK on Lawrence two block west of western that NEVER has any customers (how does it stay in business????)

The 9 is getting extended to Wilson, taking Wilson to Ravenswood to Metra, then turning onto Lawrence and starting south on Ashland again. So closest NB stop will be Ashland & Wilson, SB Ashland & Wilson and Lawrence & Ashland

Speaking of Lincoln Square. . . I make it up there about three or four times a year and the last time I was up there on the strip between Leeland and Lawrence I noticed a lot of garbage piling up and vagrants milling about. . . seems to me it would be the LAST place in the city I'd expect that kind of malarkey. . . did I miss a memo or something?
