Welcome Denvergotback, I hope the move goes well.

As a proud graduate of Weber State University, I have a fondness of Ogden. In my opinion it has the best midrise buildings in the state outside of Salt Lake. There is good history there and it has been on a (very slow) upswing for years.

Agreed. Ogden has some of the best un-renovated building stock in the western US. The bones up there are amazing. I always say it's a unique mix of old western rail town and Detroit. I mean that with much love. I LOVE Detroit and the prime Rustbelt cities. No other city I can think of that has that vibe out west.

While it wasn't a roundabout, it was there and it did attract numerous inattentive drivers.

A good spot would be around West Temple and 6th South. This is the intersection of 2 primary gateways into SLC. A companion of sorts could be added at the 5th South intersection as well at a later date.

For State Street, I think 7th or 8th South would be a good location. That way we spread some of these features outward as they could possibly encourage development/redevelopment faster.
Those areas were some of the intersections I have always had in mind. There are many intersections at the south end that are yet surrounded by undeveloped or underdeveloped land. Creating something grand and iconic would certainly be appropriate, especially for a gateway corridor like 6th South. I'm very impatient for the development of that whole southern sector like 5th and 6th, or 7th to 9th also. The Sears area can't happen soon enough!

I'm coming from Denver

Thanks for the info! This sounds strange, but even though I don't know anyone on here, I still trust all your opinions about a place moreso than others.

Utahns really seem to think that any place that's even a little bit seedy is a horrible slum.
I feel like that's how the entire mountain west is, certain areas just get unnecessarily knocked down too much.

I have been getting into city photography lately and I'm really excited to try and find time to head into these cities and take some pictures to post on here.

Thanks for sharing. It's a very positive spotlight on Salt Lake City. All the shots are great, too!

If past recent towers such as 222, Regent, Promontory, and 111 are any indication, Towers bring out the photo bug in a number of forum members. There shouldn't be a problem with getting multiple members to do weekly updates. This especially since it would seem like several members have offices within steps of the site.

Denvergotback, I'm really looking forward to you picture updates. Since your going to be transferring to the Provo area I hope you will include Provo and MSA in your hobby. There's a lot of development going on down there, but lately the updates have had to come mostly from the newspapers.

A sign went up about a week ago that the Social Hall tunnel under State St. would close June 1. Does anyone know if that will be permanent? I use it several times a week and it seems to get steady traffic during the day, primarily of people going from Harmons and parking garages on Social Hall Ave to City Creek Center and adjacent offices.

I may be wrong, but I believe it is getting rebuilt as part of the 95 State (Tower 8) development.
In one of the renderings, it appears to show some sort of new glass structure in its place.

"The building will also feature a 5th-floor garden terrace with 7,000 square feet of landscaping, a lobby with 28-foot floor-to-ceiling glass, on-site restaurant, and a renovated underground pedestrian walkway beneath State Street with direct, protected access to City Creek Center," CCRI stated in a news release.

I would imagine the traffic flow is going to increase substantially once this current round of building is completed, hence the need for the rehab. Then there's another tower in the plans, right? That current tunnel wasn't built to handle even the current flow, let alone what's coming. Now I wish they would demo the current Fed. Reserve building on the southwest corner and put a proper tower there. I'm sure they will someday.

Has anyone heard any stirrings lately regarding the Dinwoody, Old Arrow Press Sq. block? That block is so prime, especially now with the CCH going in.

I knew they were building Church Meeting House space on two of the lower levels of the building. When I saw that rendering it suddenly clicked for me. The non-glass portion of the tower is the LDS meeting house, then the glass portion of the first level is the office tower lobby, with the office tower above. Does anybody know if the wards that are currently meeting the Joseph Smith Memorial Building will be moving to this new building? I know there are lot of new residences downtown but I can't imagine that so many of them are active LDS that it would require construction of a new church. Just wondering if they are replacing an older church or if this is net-new.

Any idea if that 5th floor terrace will be public space? I love me some up high and outside in a city. We need more of it!

Social Hall Pavilion

Building Management sent this out last week:

"One project you may not have heard about is the redevelopment of the tunnel & Social Hall Monument (affectionately known as the glass house) that connects the Key Bank Tower and the City Creek Food Court to the parking garages and Harmons on Social Hall Ave. Over the coming months, the glass structure will be removed and replaced with a new enclosure for the stairs, escalators, and a new elevator. The new structure, the Social Hall Pavilion, will help create more appealing retail opportunities and facilitate access into 95 State at City Creek.

Work will commence on the tunnel on or around May 15, 2019. At that time the tunnel will be closed for approximately six months while demolition and new construction takes place. It is anticipated that in November 2019 temporary stairs will be installed which will allow use of the tunnel during the winter months. During the May through November closure, those parking in Eagle Gate or Social Hall garages will need to utilize city sidewalks and crosswalks to cross State Street. Final completion of the Social Hall Pavilion project is slated for mid-2020, after which the tunnel will reopen! Construction of 95 State at City Creek will continue through September 2021."

Has anyone seen any renderings of the "Social Hall Pavilion"?
