^ With EPCOR and the Ice District now on the northern edge of downtown, I expect that part of central Edmonton will really start to change in the years ahead.

Agree. It could turn into a great little stretch of town. As always, it comes down to design and planning. Hopefully they opt for something urban. Retail at grade, condos/office above, wide quality paving, and some greenery. Massive podiums (unless they can make it human scaled at street level) and towers in the park should be avoided.

It will not be so long before new developments start filling this area. In terms of the skyline alone: not flattering.

Ice District 2.0 will add around 3000-4000 units in 10-14 towers. There is a new hotel soon to be going up along that stretch that will help, but yes, it is the 'backside' of our postcard shot.

I instantly recognize the Epcor tower. Glad it won't be Edmonton's tallest anymore, that's not a good looking building, just seems awkward to me. Still holding out hope Manulife 2 goes ahead one day, that will up the level of design in Edmonton for sure.

Can't wait to see more tall towers in Oliver and areas west of downtown too, still has a commie block feel to it, and Pearl looks absolutely massive!

I never liked EPCOR all that much either. For some reason it always looked to me like it would be more at home in an Asian megacity like Seoul. Always thought it was kind of lame that it became Edmonton's tallest with those little blobs on top. Manulife is a much classier building... Edmonton has an amazing stock of 60s, 70s and 80s towers.

Fear not, within a year or so EPCOR will fall to 5th tallest. Once the other towers surpass it (by a long shot in some cases), it will be far less prominent.

It will be better as a background tower for sure. Edmonton is the skyline that I think will change the most in the next 5 years or so.

I've taken my fair share of shots from that area of Edmonton. Certainly not the most photogenic locations but it does show the potential as some of you have kindly put it.

Here are a couple (cherry picked and cropped) which were taken about a hundred or so meters from what was posted...I just couldn't bring myself to include the foreground

What an incredibly interesting angle. It took me a minute to sort this one out.

I enjoyed that photo too. You can see the potential in it.
Hi everybody, it's been a really long time since I've logged in here. I'm the photographer.
Thrilled to see it posted here and discussed at some length, and I'm glad you enjoyed it, even though it's not Edmonton's finest angle.

Might as well keep this thing on topic, I seem to remember that we all love images with "peer-into-the-windows" crazy high resolution.

Big panorama I shot on Friday night, hoping I left enough room for Stantec when it's topped out to do a comparison later on.

With original resolution available for viewing too. 56k/mobile warning, it's a 75MB file.

And here is the same angle from 2005:
