I'm excited to step foot into Ottawa's very first downtown Cineplex (correct me if I'm wrong). Aside from the sporting events, the movie theater is what I'm looking forward to most.

You would be very wrong. Rideau Centre and the World Exchange Plaza had movie theatres for years.

They were both Famous Players, who were bought by Cineplex and then these 2 theatres were sold to Empire.

So, they were Cineplex owned for a short time.

In case no one has seen this little bit of info yet, there will be free parking up to 3 hours for Cineplex movie goers:

Looks like in the end basically everyone (except the restaurants) will provide free parking.

The opening week movies for Lansdowne Cineplex are up now. They are all mainstream movies.

Which was expected. I will try out the VIP for Furious 7. Love those SCENE points and how once you get 1000 accumulated, you can use em for whatever, including IMAX at Silvercity and even VIP at Lansdowne, which is great, because VIP is $22 for a ticket!

I am very excited that the new Lansdowne park cinemas will open this Friday. I have been waiting for them to open a long time. However, I do not wish to go on the grand opening day or the rest of this month because the movies will be packed full. I prefer to go in April, when it empties a little bit. I wish to see Cinderella at the new Lansdowne park cinemas. I will walk there and maybe try one of the new restaurants. I do not drink alcoholic beverages at all. If I enter into the Lansdowne park cinemas, is anyone going to make me drink alcohol? I do not like the taste of it. I just prefer to have popcorn, coca cola, and a chocolate bar.

I suppose I'll go to check it out at one point... those comfy seats and state of the art projection and sound equipment certainly have their appeal... but a room full of people chowing down on cheeseburgers during a movie ??? don't quite see the appeal of that...

I will go to this cinema once to see what it is like. If I do not like it, I will just stick to the Bytowne, Rainbow, and Silvercity.

I think Silver City will seem archaic after going to the new Lansdowne Cinema. As for the Rainbow and Bytowne, it's a completely different thing.

The Rainbow shows only second run movies. When I went on a Tuesday afternoon last month at the Rainbow, everybody paid $2.50 to get in, meaning children, adults, and seniors paying the same price. The Bytowne just shows foreign, indie, independant, and classic films. I am a member of the Bytowne, so I have a membership card. Silvercity is located in Gloucester, so there is a lot of parking space and one does not have to pay for parking. More people live in the suburbs than downtown.

Critical tenant of Lansdowne retail enters spotlight

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Sun
First posted: Tuesday, March 24, 2015 05:18 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, March 24, 2015 05:24 PM EDT

The new movie house at Lansdowne Park is vital to the success of the entire site and the financial performance of the public-private redevelopment.

Cineplex Cinemas Lansdowne is, like most theatres, an anchor tenant. Stores and restaurants will lean on it for business, and that's good for the landlord, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, which is the city's business partner on the Lansdowne transformation.

Where football, hockey and soccer games happen once or twice a week during their regular seasons, the cinema has the potential to attract visitors every day.

The movie chain gave a handful of reporters a sneak peek Tuesday before opening the doors to dignitaries Wednesday and finally the general public Friday.

Workers were still putting the finishing touches on the building, which is unique compared to other Cineplex theatres because it's three floors, according to the company's communications director Mike Langdon.

The theatre is branded as VIP cinema by Cineplex. It means four licensed auditoriums for adults will have reclining seats with servers taking orders before the movie begins. Another auditorium has a couple of rows at the back that tilt and shake with the picture on the screen. Moviegoers can reserve their seats in these auditoriums. There are also five regular auditoriums.

The top floor has a bar and lounge overlooking the Aberdeen Pavilion. It will be open to ticketholders and generally serves typical pub food and drinks.

Lansdowne is the first Cineplex VIP movie theatre in Ottawa.

Cineplex, which acquired the theatre when Empire pulled out, believes the surrounding retail at Lansdowne will also drive business to the cinema.

"We think Lansdowne is really a great fit for VIP with all of the entertainment and retail that exists outside our walls. It will bring traffic and I think it will do very well here," Langdon said.

The company has considered one potential barrier to people coming from outside the core: Parking. Cineplex will give moviegoers free three-hour underground parking with a cinema ticket.

Central Ottawa once again gets a theatre showing newly released blockbuster flicks, something that disappeared with the closing of cinemas at the World Exchange Plaza and Rideau Centre (although the Mayfair Theatre and ByTowne Cinema also serve movie buffs quite well).

It's one more piece of the Lansdowne puzzle put into place as other stores ramp up for their openings. Jack Astor's is the latest restaurant to open.

With the opening of the new Lansdowne park cinemas, will the Mayfair be affected? The Mayfair is only a few blocks down and it shows foreign and second run movies. Will they construct other movie theatre with VIP experience in a Ottawa?

If the VIP goes over well at Lansdowne I could see both Silver City and Star Cité getting 1 room converted to VIP.

Though it holds 0 interest for me, I could see why others might like it.

Silvercity is still a pretty good looking theatre on the inside. I think it got renovated within the last 3-5 years, so I dont think it's going to look archaic any time soon!

I do not believe that Silvercity will close any time soon because many people live in Gloucester and there is a lot of parking space. It could be possible that they could convert one of the theatres into VIP. They have an IMAX in which you have an assigned seat. At Christmas, I went to see the Hobbit #3 in the IMAX theatre and I had to sit in an assigned seat. Will all the movie theatres at the new Lansdowne park cinemas have assigned seating?
