It's almost too tall. It dwarfs everything and look pretty ridiculous IMO.

Well, one can, I believe, marvel at the engineering accomplishment and the sheer height of the building, which I do, and also say that it looks ridiculous in comparison to the surrounding skyline. I don't know if I'd use the work ridiculous...maybe odd? strange? otherwordly? ungainly? singular?

No, no, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I'm just pointing out that the height of this building does not do justice to the skyline in the sense that it is too tall, making 50 floor skyscrapers look like 2 floor brick walk-ups. And no, I did mean to say ridiculous because (to me) it is ridiculous. Not the building itself, but it's impact on the rest of the skyline.

Is it though an engineering marvel? Of course. Does it do justice to the skyline? That's all perogative. I feel the skyline (without the Burj) is still too pre-mature to have a building of this height stand in the middle of it.

That's my two-cents.

I might agree with you, but it's all out of jealousy.

Jealous? No, not jealous. Why should I be? I said eveything I needed to and no more needs to be said. I fail to see how being jealous stems from any of that. I am happy for Dubai and highly admire what they are doing. No jealousy comes from that.

Toronto has a building that dwarfs everything around it. In time more buildings around the burj will even out it's presence on the skyline.

Agreed. What I said a few posts back is in regards to present time, but I'm sure the skyline surrounding the Burj will fill in more over time.

Fair enough.

(Mind you I never said that the Dubai skyline wasn't extremely goofy.)

And please don't hate on me, I'm just giving my opinion

It sure does stick out like a sore thumb, but that doesn't mean such a look is not contextual. To me, it has the general aesthetics of a Muslim minaret in the desert, stretched out towards the sky. The same massing of the skyline would have looked more out of place in, say, the US, the country that pioneered the concept of a dense, high-rise commercial core and thus a place where one generally associates height with expensive land and moneraty efficiency (unlike the traditional religious symbolism of height in Islamic countries), and may expect the tallest buildings to be in the densest highrise districts.

Haha, I phrased that wrong. I meant to say:

"I might agree with you, but I only agree because I'm jealous."

Sorry bout that.
