^ There's a throwback. I shouldn't, but I kinda liked that one for some reason.

I certainly like the development in the neighborhood, but I've been disappointed by the general quality of design in and around Chinatown. The game needs to be stepped up. Overwhelmingly middling at best, with a heaping of some truly horrendous stuff. Quite fortunate to have had those SOM and Gang additions over the last 10-15 years.

North Lake Shore Drive reconstruction alternative selection announced for Spring 2024. It's driving me crazy how long this is taking...

For those unfamiliar, what exactly is the "alternative selection" being announced?

IDOT wants to widen North LSD. It's a project wrapped up in a bunch of promises of "more parkland" and safer pedestrian areas. None of which are part of the main scope of the project. It's kinda criminal how IDOT has pushed this through while misleading the public on the overall scope of the project. Here's the project website.

If you're very interested, I highly recommend reading the "Alternatives to be Carried Forward" technical memorandum under the documents section. It highlights the skewed logic of state traffic planners and how their modeling pushed forward the overall expansion of LSD.

I really wish they could aim for the land-based tunnel express alternatives, and low-speed boulevard traffic on the surface. Even if they can't do it right now, to design with this long-term goal in mind. The fact is, the lakeshore is not nearly as enjoyable as it should be when there's constant highway speed traffic.

What's going on in front of Union Station?

they're about to start ripping out the whole street, the train station is still active below it. I assume this is to keep the weather out. Here's a quote from yimby:

'The 18-month closure will see the road, which sits above the station itself, completely demolished for the first time since it was built in 1918. This will eventually also close the front doors of the station for a limited time as the sidewalks are replaced and the street is rebuilt with new medians for the many buses that load on it.'

Yes, CDOT is rebuilding the Canal St viaduct. This particular block sits on top of the Union Station concourse so keeping the rain and snow out is important while they rebuild the road.

I imagine they are also adding the tent so that they can heat it to 40 degrees like a golf dome, which should make construction a lot quicker and easier (pouring concrete, painting the waterproof coatings, etc).

This is a long term project along the length of Canal St and they will rebuild the other blocks over the next few years, going north up to Madison and south all the way to Taylor. The other blocks have tracks/platforms beneath them, but not the actual interior of Union Station, so I doubt they will tent those.
