That's... about a mile away from UChicago Medicne's main campus (to be fair, UC has a river east location now...).

^^^ Chicago is massive enough to warrant multiple large hospital and outpatient services, especially in under-served parts of the City where there is much more of a need for this.

Yeah not saying it's a bad thing, just seems like a somewhat aggressive move by Northwestern Medical to me! May force UChicago to up its Hyde Park outpatient game (which... is not great in my experience)

Oh I know, I wasn't implying you were, sorry if that's how it came off.

NWM has oodles of money (just like UCM), and I think moving further south is a good bet because it's a local sub-market that I don't believe they've tapped into before.

Plus, UCM is expanding as well, especially with the new dedicated Cancer center, in addition to updating other buildings on campus, like long-term plans for Mitchell, DCAM, etc.

I know that even Provident Cook County was planning a new $240 million expansion project, but it is currently being re-worked because cost overruns last year had the project come in well over budget at over $300 million.

As many have noted, the long-term trends for Bronzeville are very bright. The area continues to fill in with upper-middle class housing, it has easy access to downtown and Hyde Park jobs, and lakefront parks. Retail follows rooftops, so I think we'll continue to see investments like this.

^ IIRC this is the site Trammell Crow purchased from Shapack. I don't believe we've seen any kind of zoning application for this one, but it's hard to keep track with all the proposals in Fulton...

The historic 5 story building at 1130 S Wabash Ave got a demo permit the other day, last week. It's owned by SB Yen from Hinsdale, which owns a variety of hotels in the area including Whitehall in Gold Coast and Homewood Suites/Best Western Grant Park just north on Wabash. They built the 30 story Homewood Suites there.

For this, they bought the building in 2020 for $4.4M but took out a $16.5M mortgage in December 2022, about a year ago.

Anyone know their plans for the site?

Will the smaller building to the left and the lot to the right also be part of the new development?

^1130 S Wabash is part of the old Printers Row legacy of the South Loop. This building was home to a letterpress/engraver that supplied stationary to Marshall Field's clientele. Customers would order social sets from Fields service people who were extremely well schooled in stationary production. Everyday those orders were sent by Fields messengers down to Wabash. The building was filled with equipment and paper, ink, copper plates and people working on letterpress/engraving and litho presses banging out production. Timber frame with super heavy-duty floors and large windows for lighting and window lights on the roof allowed craftsman to produce perfect printed finished materials.
But go ahead and tear it down - no one gives a shit about Chicago's lame manufacturing, publishing history. And this building built with virgin lumber from the Northwoods of Minnesota or Wisconsin is obsolete. We desperately need another knock off shlip shlap box with shitty layouts that offer no artistry or craftmanship or add any value to the lives of those inside.
