This would have looked just as good in a dark brown or sandstone color more neutral colored glass.

This isn't a big project by any means, but I totally didn't even know this was a thing, but apparently BJ gave it a green light?

Well, Because she basically shot the thing down for no good reason. Rahm signed off on it, the Corps of Engineers signed off.... Then Ms. FunKiller came in and smacked it down.

Whoa, had no idea this was a thing either, and it looks great! Makes sense for that location too.

Good Lord, Lightfoot really did suck, didn't she?? It was...such a weird time.

So this is dumb. . . on many levels. . .

1 - Less people are boating. . . don't know why, just is. . .
2 - Monroe Harbor is not even half full. . . south harbor isn't even canned anymore
3 - The logical thing to do here would be to use the north side of Navy Pier for larger passenger vessels that currently have nowhere to dock downtown

. . .

If people park there and party, like they do on the riverwalk, and the activity spills over onto the pier, it would make it seem like much more of a... pier.

Always wanted someone to buy an old carrier and park it there as a museum like the one in San Diego.

Any potential old USN aircraft carrier (there is currently an old kitty hawk class awaiting disposal) is simply way too big to fit through locks of the st. Lawrence seaway.

The maximum ship length for the locks is 740', so the biggest naval ship that would fit would be an old cruiser.

I agree that the ideal/logical thing to do would be to use that side as a cruise terminal but that is a much bigger job that I believe would require extensive dredging. This seems like a rather short-term plan (using floating docks, not permanent) to bring in some revenue and use that side for something other than an auto sewer.

Longer term I hope they do build a proper cruise terminal and activate the entire north side of Navy Pier by decking over the access road. In the meantime I don't blame the city/McPier for waiting a bit to see if Viking (and others) stays committed to the Great Lake cruise business before spending big money on catering to that.

And perhaps by adding destination transient docking, we'll see an uptick in boating since people will have someplace to go besides the playpen?

It certainly can't hurt to build the marina there. It's just a weird, forlorn little channel right now. I think the idea is that the playpen folks could have an easy spot to tie up and go have a meal or purchase food/drink inside of Navy Pier.

There are similar spots along the Riverwalk where you can tie up, those are very successful but there are only a few spots, and you have to wait for the river lock in order to access those from the lake.

It is also geared to boaters from all over. Right now there is not a good place for boaters from other cities.

Illinois CDB will have a vendor/consultant outreach and informational meeting for the 78 DPI building occurred today, in Hillside:

It's happening, slowly but surely.
