Pan Am's last surviving New York-JFK building is about to be demolished forever

Story by Daniel S Osipov • 2d

John F. Kennedy International Airport is the home of Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, and American Airlines today, while also hosting almost every large foreign carrier that you can possibly think of. Go back 50 years, however, and the apron looks very different, as it instead becomes an airfield dominated by Pan Am Clippers. New York was the largest hub for Pan American World Airways, which was the de facto flagship carrier of the United States and a cultural icon of intercontinental travel in the 20th century.

i dk about a configuration, but afaik yes the bridge and foundations were built to handle commuter rail. an issue might be if the junction off the bridge and the added service ‘inconveniences’ westchester county. you know how these suburbanites are.

MTA advances long-awaited 2nd Avenue subway extension that's set to transform East Harlem

By Stephen Nessen
Published Jun 8, 2026

The MTA broke ground Monday on a major milestone to advance the century-in-the-making effort to extend the Second Avenue subway into East Harlem, bringing three new stations to the neighborhood and connecting the Q line to the Metro-North and the Lexington Avenue subway lines at 125th Street.

Crews began excavating a hole at East 119th Street and Second Avenue, which will make way for one of two tunnel boring machines that will dig out the new subway tunnel.
