Indeed. Jemseg Bridge is the only thing that prevents Route 2 from being more boring from Fredericton-Moncton than from Edmundston-Fredericton.

Yes the Champlain with a total lenght of 3.4km.

One thing that's always been curious to me, we have ALMOST no proper bridges in Newfoundland. Almost none. I believe Marystown is the only community with anything large enough that it couldn't just be a culvert. And perhaps Placentia.

Now, I'm only going on personal experience, what I've personally driven over... but I do suspect this one (in Marystown) may be the longest bridge in Newfoundland:



Everything else is just a school bus or two in span.

From Ottawa you're not saving much time and for a half-hour difference i'd rather twinned cruising for the overwhelming majority than the backroads adventuring that the Maine route requires. Ottawa vs Toronto would make no difference on that route, you still go through Montreal that way, via Sherbrooke. Only difference is you would head up the 417 instead of down the 401.

The border crossing is so ridiculously tiny anyway you never get ridiculed, the guy comes out of the little hut to talk to you.

A few from getting to today's hike.

Southern Shore Highway, officially The Irish Loop, somewhere between Calvert and Fermeuse.



Quick aside, a lot of the roads through communities down there are freakishly small:



The Goulds Bypass, or Goulds Back Road, or Goulds High Road:

It connects the Southern Shore to the Pitts Memorial Drive section of the ring road around St. John's without having to pass through the actual residential area of the Goulds, the farming neighbourhood south of the city. It's 90 km/hr, compared to 50 for most of the other route, and they're about equal in length. If you stay on the Goulds Bypass straight through the two big intersections (Ruby Line, heads back into Goulds, and Pitts, mentioned above) it becomes Commonwealth Avenue, the main drag through the city of Mount Pearl.



And Pitts Memorial Drive heading back into downtown.

It's been like that for ages (traffic on the left) on this stretch of the highway.

It will be changed with the Turcot interchange mega-rebuild.

I think if you look at that stretch of highway in the context of all one-way carriageways or ramps not as a duel highway crossing a duel highway…..then follow the alignment of each ramp and how it positions itself to merge in a particular direction it seems to make sense. Also take into account the original designer had to bridge a multi-track railway passing right thru the centre.
