I have to agree with UrbanBoy. I'd rather see the Utah theater become a film center than try to make it a broadway theater and cram everyone in there. ... Plus I really would love to see the parking lot next to squatters be developed. Broadway has a lot of charm and even more potential to it. The addition of a "Broadway" style theater would really add to that streets flavor.

... About the Broadway center tower: That is kind of the way that things happen here(and elsewhere) it seems. The initial proposal and height always changes. HP was 28 floors at one point right? Eagle Gate was in the 40's I heard. The CCC towers are still fluctuating. ... It would be nice if developers put their money where there mouth's are.

It's not that they would try to cram people into the existing auditorium, they'd demolish it, and build a new auditorium in it's and the parking garage's place (north of the auditorium). It could work, and it could be very roomy. I just would rather give that building another chance to be restored and to be used as a film center. I wonder how much money Robert Redford has, and whether or not he'd invest in it? It could be a grand showcase for Sundance feature films. Furthermore, it could showcase independent films year round.

yeah. I didn't mean to make it seem like that it was you thought. I started stating my own opinion after I said I agreed that it would be nice over at the squatters parking lot. I understand the capitol rennovation and auditorium expansion idea but I was under the impression that what they would do is still just speculation. If they used the Utah theater for the broadway theater I didn't think that means it is set in stone that they would expand it and use capitol theater as well. Regardless of what the scenario would be with the Utah theater as a broadway theater, I know that I would rather see it as a film center and see restoration of its true dimensions, and then have a new theater built at the squatter's parking lot location. ... Sorry to be so confusing. Sometimes I just type really fast and hit "post" with out proof reading to see if I clearly laid down my ideas.

About the Broadway center tower rendering I counted about 17-18 floors, but the building today only has what?...12-14?

Airport expansion will eat most of budget hike

Airport expansion will eat most of budget hike

Salt Lake City's 2008-09 proposed budget may appear bloated at $779 million, but the bulk of the $115 million jump from this year's spending plan is slated for expansion work at Salt Lake City International Airport.
More than 80 percent of the spending spike - nearly $94 million - will go toward capital improvements at the airport, according to Steve Fawcett, the city's interim director of management services.
"This expansion plan has been developing over many years with different iterations," he explained.
Airport revenue comes directly from the airlines and concessions, not the city's general fund.

2. I really like the plans already in store for regent street and the Tribune building, and think a broadway style theater will mess them up.
3. If they choose the Utah Theater, the auditorium will likely be demolished, which I'd rather it not be so as to give it another chance for restoration as a film center.
4. 300 South is named Broadway.
5. This is a chance to add to the revitalization of that part of town, whereas, hopefully the two blocks south of City Creek Center can survive and even thrive as a arts and culture district because of alternate anchors and it's close proximity to City Creek Center.
6. Does not require demolition of any existing buildings; fills in a parking lot.

Just a few thoughts.
I agree as well. I really like the idea of revitalizing the Utah and building a new theater on 300 South. The biggest challenge with the 300 South option will be parking. The other two options have plenty of very close parking garages.

Question

Hey all, on my bus ride in this morning it looked as though the building that used to house the Cabana Club (I think) had its skin removed and being prepped for a surface remodel. Anyone have information on this?

I agree with you 100% on this one Urban Boy, yes I said 100%. I think having CCC anchor the north end and Rose Wagner and a new 2,000 seat theater could anchor a little further SW, that in between the two would really fill in nicely.

It would be great if Sundance Institute would chip in a little cash and partner with the city or County on renovation of the Utah. I would like it to be restored with the balcony rather than leave it as two separate theaters. It could be as someone else mentioned, the theater for the large Sundance premiers, I love the Egyptian in PC but PC is bursting at the seems showing Sundance films. Plus with the new CCC stores that are new to the market, higher end, that will give people something to do while in the SLC. SLC is really changing, and although it is the LDS church that is building CCC the face and culture of the city is become more and more diverse, and would be a great addition to Sundance.

I think the east of Squatters option is Brilliant. Not only does it place it across the street from Rose Wagner, it places it on the nice pedestrian friendly street, with the new medians. But being a vacant lot, construction could start immediately upon approval. Thus leveling the field dramatically with Sandy's open space. As for parking in the area there are still a few surface lots in the area and Trax is only two blocks away, the horrible Earl Holding lot is only a two blocks away also.

Ok I'm on board, build the new theater on Broadway, renovate the Utah as a film center in partnership with Sundance and remove the NAC ad building on Main and connect main to Regent with pedestrian access.

yep, I'm on board with that option too. Not to brag here, but 300 S. just east of Squatters was the local that I posited when we were having this discussion about a year ago. So it was my idea and I want naming rights on the theater honestly though it really is a perfect location, though I don't know who owns it or how much they would want for it, but come on, it is just a parking lot so it would have to be cheaper than a lot with existing structures on it right?

I would very much like to see the Utah become a film center which would allow it to remain more in its current state and not have to be partially demolished, thus preserving more of its historic character; somebody give Redford a call, I think it could work for Sundance.
ok, I'll just second all of Urbanboys points, it is just the best option.

So if the auditorium on the Utah Theater was demolished and rebuilt, what would be left of it? Isn't that about the only original part left of the original?

Speaking of the Airport Expansion I have a small update. I notice while leaving work it looks like the far Northwest parking lot is about to close. ( Closing on May 12 ) That parking lot is about where that new parking garage will go. I wounder if it's about to be torn up. Not really sure. But since i drive by it everynight i'll keep you guys up to date.

They are putting so much money into the airport. Is it a waste since they are planning on tearing the whole thing down and building new terminals? Maybe, because they are spending so much, that means the new terminal is 20 years down the road.

Are we sure the airport expansion is not about to begin in phases? Why would the improvements and replacements being done now not be a part of the long term plan?

regarding Euro design and coloring...Quote from arkhitektor

"To me, these look like cheap, faddish architecture. They are pretty forgettable and I don't think that they would age well. Similar to Angelina's Corner and the Kirkland condos. I am all for this type of infill, but the design isn't very timeless and will look dated in a few years." Architektor

Travel in Germany, Holland and the UK and you will see that these types of buildings really look good even after years. I think you are voicing your opinion and I am voicing mine here but they look stranger in SLC because they are surrounded by a basically non homogenous building configuration and thus they are odd eggs.

Actually in Brooklyn, they are using this design in Hi rise apartments and they look great. High rise in Brooklyn, outside of the DT is about 12 stories.

I do know they offer very creative space possibilities.

As far as the Mansard roof, I do not think it ever looked terrific as it 99% of the time was placed on very common not to mention "cheap" designs in the states.

Now the European mansard roof upon a common structure is certainly a thing of beauty. It looks so great on an imposing structure and so sad on a house.

Just my opinion

About Air Port Expansion...

Last night when I was driving, I was listening to Bloomberg radio. They had a panel of architects and Air Port planners. Part of the time they talked about the woes of airlines and gas but then they got into the topic of Airports.

The first they sighted was the new Denver International. They all remarked about its beautiful design and lay out but to the last person they all said that it was a pointless expenditure. They remarked at how Stapleton could have accomplished the same outcome of performance if finances had been placed correctly. Yes, it would not have been as beautiful and defining but listening to these guys, they felt that money invested to the right projects at Stapleton would have not only been MUCH more cost effective but also the right thing to do.

Denver was not alone, they sited Minneapolis, Cincy, Detroit, Miami and Phoenix.

I think the days of waiting for the new, huge and improved airports are numbered.

I would be amazed if SLC International does not follow the way these Air Port "experts" were thinking. I mean SLC is a major airport but not so major that things should really change that much.

After that, I would love to see SLC have one of those gorgeous structures.

When I look, here in NY, at JFK, Newark and La Guardia, I see update changes and not whole sale revamping. Instead they are going to build upon the Newburgh NY Air Force base (Now Stewart International). Move a major airport 40 miles north (a very country area) and do it that way.

Actually from the pictures I've seen that are much farther back in the thread, the lobby, auditorium and stage are all mostly still intact. There has obviously been some damage and while I'm not a historic preservation expert it doesn't look at all beyond repair.
