Judge questions federal government’s reasoning for withholding Gateway funds

A federal judge questioned the Trump administration’s rationale for freezing Gateway Tunnel rail project funding on Thursday, citing social media posts from President Donald Trump as she appeared to ask whether the federal government was withholding the funds for political reasons.

Attorneys for the federal government told U.S. District Judge Jennette Vargas the feds halted funding to the Gateway Development Commission on Sept. 30 because it was reviewing whether the commission has, as it claims, complied with Trump’s new DEI hiring standards. Vargas, however, pointed to posts the president made, seemingly about the project, in October, asking how the contents of those posts didn’t demonstrate arbitrary and capricious reasoning to halt funding to the project.

Second Avenue Subway: Trump admin agrees to release frozen funds moments before hearing in MTA lawsuit

The Trump administration will begin releasing funding for the East Harlem leg of the Second Avenue Subway, which it has withheld since last fall, following a lawsuit that the MTA filed last month to unfreeze the money.

Shortly before a Federal Court of Claims judge was set to hear arguments in the MTA’s suit on Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) released a letter it sent to the transit agency, noting that they had struck a deal to release the funds.

In celebratory statements, both Gov. Kathy Hochul and MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber attributed the feds’ move to their legal action.

“We took the Trump Administration to court after they illegally froze funding for the Second Avenue Subway. Today, they backed down. The freeze is over,” Hochul wrote in a post on X.

Jamaica LIRR Station is getting a makeover, and transit officials want to hear from passengers

Transit officials announced on Thursday the beginning of the planning stages for the redesign of Jamaica Station on the Long Island Rail Road — launching a public outreach campaign to gather feedback from the hundreds of thousands of commuters who travel through the station each day.

The MTA and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the AirTrain to JFK Airport that terminates at Jamaica, along with elected officials said they will be available in-person at the station to hear riders’ input about the transit hub’s makeover. They also posted QR codes on signs at Jamaica Station for those running to catch the train to scan and provide their thoughts.

Congestion pricing: Trump admin appeals federal judge’s ruling halting its efforts to end Manhattan toll program

The Trump administration still has congestion pricing in its crosshairs, even after a federal judge shut down its effort to kill the tolling program earlier this year.

U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Sean Duffy, via the Justice Department, on Friday filed a notice of appeal to U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman’s March 3 decision in favor of the MTA.

The feds filed their appeal with the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

World Cup transit: Mamdani plans new Queens bus lane for ‘LaGuardia Link’, Hochul announces lower shuttle bus ticket prices

Both Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul want to make it easier for revelers to get to the FIFA World Cup final next month.

Mamdani’s Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to speed up the Q70 Select Bus Service (SBS) service, aka the “LaGuardia Link,” connecting Queens’ LaGuardia Airport with the Jackson-Heights Roosevelt Avenue subway station, his office announced on Wednesday.

The plan involves painting a dedicated eastbound center-running bus lane on Broadway between 69th Street and Roosevelt Avenue. The agency’s proposal would keep one vehicle travel lane in each direction.

NYC plans to deploy electric barges on waterways in bid to get diesel trucks off streets

New York City officials want to deploy a fleet of fully electric refrigerated barges on the waterways to replace diesel-spewing trucks that haul food in and out of Hunts Point in the Bronx.

Documents published by the city's Economic Development Corporation on Thursday show the agency is seeking experts to develop plans to launch the electrified barges when it opens a new port next to the Hunts Point produce and fish markets in 2030.

Hopes Fading for Metro-North Service at New Bronx Stations by Next Year

The MTA had said it aimed to open temporary stations and partial service as part of the Penn Station Access megaproject by the end of 2027.

The MTA’s hopes of offering limited Metro-North service at new stations in the East Bronx as soon as next year appear to be dwindling, officials confirmed Friday.

The regional transportation authority had floated the alternative last October as part of a plan to jump start Penn Station Access, the $2.9 billion megaproject to eventually extend the Metro-North Railroad west to Penn Station and to open four new commuter rail stations in East Bronx neighborhoods that have fewer mass transit options.

The overall project has been slowed by a series of disputes with Amtrak that have pushed its original completion date from 2027 to 2030, even as the MTA has pressed the federally funded passenger railroad to help make up for lost time.
