Hut's Hamburgers to close

By Will Anderson – Managing Editor, Austin Business Journal
14 minutes ago

Hut's Hamburgers will close this October after 80 years in business.

Owner Mike Hutchison said in a June 10 announcement that the eatery at 807 W. Sixth St. will shut down Oct. 20. It was founded in 1939 and Mike and Kim Hutchinson bought it in 1981.

“Hut’s has been a major part of our lives and we have loved running the business, but after 38 years, we are ready to move in a different direction. We have appreciated all of our wonderful customers," Mike Hutchinson said in a statement. “We have an excellent relationship with our landlord, the Joseph’s [sic], but it is just time for us to move on.”

Weird and sad.

I wasn't a huge fan of Hut's, but it's an institution.

So the airport location that just opened?

Never been to Hut's. Is it any good?

I wonder if they'll keep the old building and put another restaurant there. I like the art deco charm.

I've never thought that the food was anything to complain about, but I always thought that it was just okay. The large variety of burgers they offer is something you don't find everywhere though. Nostalgia is the biggest reason to go there, IMHO.

I've been to Hut's twice with 30 years in between visits. It's not that good, but they do have a huge selection of burgers unlike any place else.

So what you are saying is they have a huge selection of shitty burgers that made it worth going to every 30 years.

I would go with mediocre as opposed to shitty.

Who knows what will be done with that site. I have my doubts that the Hut's building will survive though. The liquor store will almost surely be demolished. I can't see it being usable for much else.

All of the news stories about the closing that I read say it will be another locally managed restaurant.

Yep, but that doesn't mean that they won't do a tear down and rebuild.

At one point not too long ago there was a proposal for a residential tower including (I think) the corner liquor store and the pizza joint -- but not including Hut's. Has anybody heard if that's still a thing?

EDIT: Trust Towers for some excellent coverage from Aug of last year. https://austin.towers.net/lets-catch...al-tower-plan/

Turns out there were rumors of Hut's closing even back then, even though the owner denies it at the time.

The tower -- 28 story residential -- was planned for 506-508 West Ave, but would've built around Hut's and the liquor store.

The 1950's liquor store next to it is also closing.

That block at night with the neon lit up on both buildings is like looking back in time 60 years.
(Yes, I know Hut's only moved there in 1981 but the building was built in 1940, and the liquor store was built in 1950, according to TCAD)

I'm sure they're also not going to miss being extorted for rising property taxes too.
Gotta sell a lot of burgers to come up with $36,000 for 2019's bill.

The Alibi cocktail bar at 96 Rainey is planned for Demo. But not for a high-rise. From a site plan filed today:

Quote:
The applicant is proposing to tear down existing bar and associated decking and ground cover and replace with new building, landscaping and streetscape with associated improvements.

No reason to keep an old bungalow structure around when the entire district is under siege.

Might as well replace with something modern & generic, or 'faux-storic'.

I don't understand, isn't this designated a historic district? Can anyone enlighten me/everyone as to which properties are actually protected, or if they even are protected, or how far-reaching such protections are? It seems like it's far easier than one would think for property owners to tear down the bungalows that basically made the district a thing in the first place.

There is soil retention fencing around the site just south of the office building on the former Concordia site. Has that been there for a while or is that site finally getting redeveloped?

I've noticed several permits over the past few months for an apartment building somewhere on the site. It appeared to be the standard Texas donut design.
