Westwood Group is planning to build more townhouses along Clifton Street attached to the base of Gladstone Ridge.

A crane was being erected this morning as I drove down Robie - on the corner of Robie/Almon.

^You beat me to it.

The crane for the final phase of Richmond Yards is going up today.

My educated guess is this is going up now to help with the King's Square building. The tower crane will likely come down in the next couple of weeks (weather pending). As of yesterday they still don't have a building permit for the Robie building and half of the site isn't even excavated.

The large tower crane is currently being disassembled.

As someone who isn't a crane expert but very intrigued, are the tower portions interchangeable with other cranes? I know they're anchored periodically throughout the span to the building, but are all the pieces part of one tower crane set?

Basically what I'm getting at, does this mean this crane will be re-located to another site due for 30ish stories or could the same crane be used at 10ish stories elsewhere?

Typically the formwork companies (who generally own or rent the cranes), stick to the same manufacturer, Terex/Potain/Liebherr/Wolff, so the tower sections are generally interchangeable. For example, 20-20 Forming appears to have made a fairly big swap of equipment over the last few weeks to manage a number of sites:
  • 7177 Quinpool - Crane removed and pieces went to:
  • King’s Wharf - Tower sections and climbing frame from Quinpool
  • Sackville Drive - Top section from Quinpool replaced luffing jib.
  • Marlstone - Used luffing job top section from Sackville Drive and presumably tower sections from Quinpool.

^Exactly.

Also sometimes the crane base doesn't match the tower sections. This is because the crane base is installed first (commonly the first foundation pour). The tower sections might still be in use elsewhere so they'll use an extra base from their lay-down yard.

Speaking of cranes when I was off of Wyse last week I saw them laying tower crane pieces in the yard at Dawson Street. All of the nearby projects have their cranes up and The Finch seems far along for a tower crane install. Any idea where this one might be headed?

That sites been used a couple times now as a storage area. I think the crane from the Richmond site nearby was there, now the one from the final two buildings on the older part of Larry Uteck is stored there.

I went through the new lane-way off of Almon connecting to St Albans street today (lining up with Clifton). Is this lane going to be a fully functioning thru-fare or will it be blocked on one end to reduce people cutting through to skip traffic? I like the connection, breaking the block up a little bit but I wasn't sure how the traffic flow would be handled through here. I couldn't get a great look, but the internal courtyards look pretty good, although they may lack sunlight penetration due to the surrounding height.

I don't know. I hope it's kept as part of the street network... and that future development north of this, between Almon and Young, can carry this connection further.

QUESTION: Does anyone know the furthest point this can be seen from the ground? I know it can be seen on Highway 102 inbound heading down the hill before Kearney Lake (~7.4km).

You can see it by Larry Uteck/Starboard.

I assume you could also see it from some of the houses along Shore Dr. as well.

I took this pic near the end of November in 2022 on a newly constructed part of the not yet open 107 Hwy. Using the measure tool on Viewpoint I estimate it to be about 8km from Richmond Yards. Clearly one could see Richmond Yards from a greater distance than this.

Probably not be the farthest point, but there's a stretch of Main Street in Cole Harbour that lines up perfectly with the tower. Almost all the way back to the Main Street / Highway 107 intersection. Approximately 8 kilometers.

I think I love the height of this one.
But I'm starting to really dislike the design..
It maybe just the huge white block on top

Plain blank walls are always unattractive.

I was *maybe still am* hoping they illuminate it in some manner. LED colour panels would be cool, but even some accent lighting with variable colour would be fun.
