August is almost over and still no movement on the site.

Not 100% true.

They have trimmed the weeds growing out into the sidewalk. And cleared a bit of the grass on the inside of the site too.

Clearly a sign that progress is imminent! /s

Is there any graffiti? I go through downtown quite often now, but rarely this stretch of James.

Lots. They haven’t bothered cleaning it for several months now.

Full of garbage as well. Why isn't the city forcing them to maintain this empty lot? It's becoming quite an eyesore.

The city should probably be forcing them to give the sidewalk back to public space. I understand it’s there as protection from the possibility that the structure of the church may be unstable but it’s been 6 or 7 years. That is embarrassing.

Does the city not have tools at their disposal where they can expropriate the land from a developer if they sit on it for too many years without starting construction?

Seriously this is an eyesore and has sat for too long, they need to be forced into action or the city should take the land and sell it another developer ready to build!

We've got homeless people getting kicked out of every square inch of the city and yet a developer is allowed to hang onto a gated up, empty property right in the downtown core for years on end with not only not only no penalty, but actual praise from the local city councilor because they had a glimmer of a plan several years ago. The Ambitious City indeed.

That would require some good $$$ to purchase the land at FMV.

I wonder what the hold-up really is.

Going to guess it's offshore financing... covid-hesitancy?

I'm serious. Foreign finance isn't a bad thing in my opinion, though.

Developer incompetence. The guy has never built anything in his life and decides to go right for a 30-storey condo tower. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. If this does happen it’ll happen slowly as he figures things out on the fly.

I thought Hue Developments was just new to Canada, not to building in general (the website says they're a subsidiary of a Vietnamese parent company)

Maybe it will get flipped to someone else. And with the height limit a non-issue, something taller will go up. It's a good site for that, without potential for much opposition.

Wow. Just unbelievable. Hope The Spec or CHCH picks this up and can run a story on it, any pressure on the developer to get this one moving.....

Several other buildings on James south were also targeted. I just read an article. The House of Java had windows smashed as well.
