I can hear the scoffing from here.
I've done a complete 180 on this. Long live the Arch! It is so quintessentially Atlanta.

I actually think this restaurant is well placed ... it gives GT students a place to drink tequila and fraternize.

This is quite sad. I thought the canopy walk concept was cool and very whimsical.

I guess millionaires who fund the development of buildings themselves can build anything they want, can't they.

I wish I was a millionaire. I'd build a bunch of wacky shit all over atlanta and no one would be able to stop me! bwahahaha

I know many people don't know that our flatiron building was built before New Yorks. I had a friend from New York come down a year or more ago and laughed at it and said "You guys trying to copy New York" I told him it was built 6 or more years before. Shut him up, ha ha!

I drove up Piedmont today. A lot of foot traffic downtown. Here's a photo compilation of the new stuff on Piedmont and also some shots by the old Grady Homes site (Veranda).

Pencil Factory across Marietta from Grady Homes.

Piedmont & Marietta: New GSU Science Building

Piedmont & Edgewood NW corner

SW corner

Renaissance Walk looking awesome

GSU Dorms

Piedmont & Ralph McGill

I love the urban friendly design of the project of Ralph McGill, but it's surrounded by the Civic Center and gated apartment "communities." Bleh.

Are the Apartments on the corner of Piedmont and Edgewood going to be brick all the way around? Are there any renderings of this?

Yea i dont know why so many dont like the arch? I mean it's really NOT nouveau riche b/c reflects OLD architecture well and as far as fitting into surroundings - it's not supposed to, its supposed to have wonderful contrast, like the modern & old in New York. And that's such a wonderful thing. I mean if NYC only built what fit into its surroundings, there would be nothing new.

I think the arch is LONG overdue, & much more memorable than anything we have downtown. Buckhead would be a nicer location for it, maybe, say like near peachtree rd. in the downtown area.

If I were living across the street from the Pine Street "mission" and crackwh0re central, I would want a wall the size of Jericho's. What a sketchy, horrible neighborhood!

And the arch is just ridiculous kitsch, foisted on the city by a self-aggrandizing fool with money but no genuine taste. It's just yet one more example of Atlanta striving so strenuously to be the city it is not, rather than capitalizing on the wonderful city that it is, which is why we were rightly mocked by the New York Times.

Not to belittle a point: but nouveau riche tries to reflect old money, or vieux riche, if you will, and just comes across as kitsch.
NYC wasn't built all at once, Atl Station was thrown up in 5yrs. Not exactly NYC and it's famous arch's surroundings... apples to oranges.

P.S. I couldn't resist. :-)

When you become a millionaire, you can build *whatever* you want.

Atlanta is what it is, and like it or not the Arch is contributing to its personality. You want kitsch? Go to vegas.

Instead of a burned out steel mill we now have an arch and a pond-ala-retaining-pool. Do you want it to go back?

I think it's fake brick tiles. Similar to AS.

No that's fine. I mean it does try to reflect the old but whats wrong with that? The St. Regis & Mansion & MANY other Buckhead ests. have done that & well. Not only that but they MIXED old & new very well throughout Buckhead - and thats the same thing theyve done in NYC.

"And Atlantic Station was built in 5 years"
--- yea but 5 years in NYC you could have 200 highrises built. So why compare small Atlantic Station's development process with a city 20,000 times bigger?

Point is theres no reason Atlantic Station should take 100 years to mix the old with the new - that makes no sense. Modern age we live in - we have to expect the best & that means definately not losing the old stuff altogether.

Besides, AS is VERY modern, so it needed some "old".

"Not exactly NYC and it's famous arch's surroundings... apples to oranges." ----- no, but that's certainly no reason to go crappy just b/c it cant be a PARIS or NEW YORK. I mean ATL is no London but thats no reason not to reach for the sky & mimic wonderful architecture.
