Best Buy hopes vending machine gadgets take off

Best Buy Canada has installed one of its Best Buy Express vending machines at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

The self-serve kiosk offers about 60 digital gizmos, including headphones, digital cameras, tablets, MP3 players, iPods and chargers.

“The kiosk is pretty large and there’s quite an array of merchandise available,” said Peter Spurway, vice-president of concession development with Halifax International Airport Authority.

“It has been in place for a couple of weeks and sales seem to be very strong.”

The Halifax airport installation gives the electronics retailer 14 express vending machines across Canada at larger airports. The chain has hundreds of express vending machines in United States airports.

This actually the 4th Best Buy location in Nova Scotia after the two stores in Halifax and the express store at the mayflower mall in Sydney.

I havent seen it in person yet... but that vending machine strikes me as a bit odd..

The article mentions being able to buy ipods and the like.. But you have to wonder, why would you buy an uncharged ipod at the airport? It would have no songs nor be any good for the current flight?

Why would you do that over just waiting till you got where you're going to buy one?

I cant see it being that popular. Maybe something like noise cancelling headphones or DVD's might be a good seller.

Just wondering if anybody has used one before..

Fair enough..

I guess I got focused in more on the electronics themselves as opposed to the accessories, which I can see a market for.

I've seen it, when I was home in mid January. In the 45 minutes I was waiting at the gate to board, roughly 10 people checked it out and I remember at least 2 buying. It might have been more, but I remember thinking what a great idea.

There are charging outlets all over airport now, and on plenty of planes. That wouldn't help with actually populating an ipod with music. I guess you'd have to have a computer with iTunes with you, or be buying it as a gift.

Compared to 2011, two of the three sectors recorded year-over-year growth, accounting for the 0.3 per cent growth in 2012.

Canadian domestic traffic held steady, rising 0.9 per cent to 2,882,198 passengers
International traffic rose 2.8 per cent, and also marked a record year serving 337,118 passengers
Transborder traffic (non-stop to the United States) declined 5.7 per cent, serving 386,385 passengers
In 2012, Halifax Stanfield was served by 18 passenger airlines flying to a total of 48 non-stop destinations (26 year-round and 22 seasonal). The airport served an average of over 170 flights each day.

Passenger airlines included Air Canada, WestJet, Jazz, Porter, United/Continental, Air Transat, American Airlines, CanJet, Condor, Air Georgian, Air St. Pierre, Delta, Icelandair, Cubana, Sunwing, Provincial Airlines and US Airways.

“Our record year in 2012 was thanks to a very strong first half,” says Ruth. “Reduced airline capacity created a downward trend in the second half of the year, and we expect it to carry over into the first quarter of 2013. We will continue to work with our airline partners to maintain and grow our air service, particularly to the United States.”

Wow, those are impressive numbers. Hopefully they will continue to grow. HIAA would be best to try to look at one of the bigger European carriers to come to (or return to) YHZ. I've always thought it would be great if KLM would come back a couple times a week during the high season.

Good. Another strong year. Though if Winnipeg continues to grow like they did last year, they may pass us for Canada's 7th busiest.

Sounds like there is potential here from some increased air traffic for Halifax. I'd love to see more options to fly directly to Europe. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

CanJet currently operates a charter airline business primarily by subcontracting its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft to Transat A.T. and providing pilots and crew for its flights under their so-called ‘wet lease’ arrangement.

I cannot imagine CanJet being a successful scheduled route operator given their track record. Twice they have gone down that road only to suddenly suspend operations and leave thousands of customers in the lurch. I know I would never book a ticket with them because of that.

Actually Canjet and Harmony Airlines are probably the only airlines in Canada to give full refunds and provide alternate travel arrangements when they suspended service.

It would certainly add some people to the numbers for YHZ - I'm quite certain that the airport has capacity from a domestic perspective. But if they are going to offer international service; I'd hope that this pumps up the need to improve the US/International capacity of the airport and maybe see an addition of a few more air bridges down towards gate 28 for international or US service.

Interesting, I wish CanJet the best!

They got that great, new hanger complex out at the airport, about time they put it back to full use.

If they offer discount travel to Europe with more amenities than Air Canada offers in economy (like Porter does), then I can see them becoming very successful.
