looks like a set of 2 Gasometers ... small and large ..... interesting!

I wonder if the one in the background helped power the Interurban - or maybe they just didn't have transmission lines that crossed the False Creek waters to the eastside neighbourhoods?

Today's Fairmont Hotel Vancouver started life as a Canadian Northern Railway Hotel, then became a CN Rail asset before being sold to CP Hotels.

Construction started before WW I, but halted because of the material shortages during the war. Canadian Northern went bankrupt because of the war and its assets were nationalized as Canadian National Rail. The hotel remained unfinished after WW I until 1928 when construction was resumed.

Only to be halted again by the depression.

The eastern gasometer/tanks are on McLean & 2nd ave, it's near the foot of the 1938 Grandview viaduct. The massive white building on the left is Van Tech high school. On the right of it (just above the DT one) is a treeless Granview cut. It's crazy how the entire city has such small trees with exception of Central Park & a few ravines. How old are the trees in Central Park ? 1850's ?

Central Park was never clear cut, the trees were reserved for the Royal Navy's use just like Stanley Park.

My mom (born 1946, moved from Netherlands as an infant) is always going on about this. e.g. every time we're near Commercial drive she'll talk about all the waves of dominant ethnicities that have passed through over the decades.

Neither of us are very happy with the current state of Vancouver vs our memories of the olden days though (olden being the 80s for me).

Hotel Vancouver was essentially done by 1932. Why did it take all the way till 1939 to open it??

Love these Officedweller!!

We moved to Vancouver in 1974 from Halifax, I was a young child but I remember this era very well in Vancouver!! We ate at that White Spot on Robson many times then my mom would go across the street to European News and get her foreign mags. We also ate the Schnitzel House many times, I remember always getting a fresh slice of rye bread while waiting for the Schnitzel!!

I also remember the original Pacific Centre mall when it was only a 1/3 block long from Eaton's, then your took a narrow escalator ( where Ronson's is now ) up to the TD Tower lobby, it wasn't until late 1975 that the Holt Renfrew and Four Seasons block was added, I remember all the retail signage in the mall was monochrome as well.

I also remember the brand new Granville Mall and how everyone was complaining because it was immediately attracting unsavoury people. Our favourite stores on Granville Mall in 1974 were Krak-A-Joke and the big A&A Records at Smithe and Granville!

Great memories!! ...Vancouver had a very special appeal and feeling back then!

Oh man, this is a billion times better than the PoMo atrocity it got turned into. The renovation should have added the retail but left the rest of the building unmolested.

There was a time when the city had vision for something different and exciting. What has downtown added since then? Just same ol condos, town homes and street retailing?

Yes the city looks perfectly wonderful back then... no improvements since at all... nope...

Does the desire to fill this forum with complaints ad nauseum just override all logic whatsoever?

Post whatever you want but for the sake of others perhaps it's appropriate to ask oneself if you're adding anything worthwhile to the conversation. For example, if you have made a similar comment over and over again perhaps it's not necessary to keep on repeating it.
