No but Murman has become so predictable that he is becoming the butt of jokes.

Predictable negativity can be just as bad as the so called "yes man"

You know what? I agree with the negativity. Originally I had thought it wasn't that bad. I tend to do that before I think. Someone mentioned the classiest museums in the world, built with honor and pride.. and kinda made me think a little on how this offers no respect.

It's not "bad", but it's not world-class either. You've got to remember this is Albertas PROVINCIAL museum.

If Alberta is one of the top 15 RICHEST places in the world, one would only assume that the province would be sparing no cost as to the development of it's international museum. Alberta has a rich history. Canada has a rich history. Why must the best museum in the country be situated in Toronto? Can WE not have something world class besides the MALL?

This looks no different than your modern day Save-On-Foods store..



Design Competition? Perhaps.. but will it matter?

Big fancy world class cities build buildings of same. Looks like Edmonton is just aiming for mediocrity to please it's own citizens... not the world. You could find a museum like this anywhere else in the country, or even on this continent.

Looks like we STILL want tourists to visit the mall!!

The big question is can you build something like a museaum that is world class for 200 million dollars these days?

It appears not.

Then you increase the amount to 400 mil (government dollars) and people start complaining.

Faves over the past couple of years were:

Illuminada, Omega, Art Gallery

But it's mixed in with the poor:

Legacy, Century, Vivacity, Venetian, Enoch Casino, Alta Vista

I'm still out on the Museum exspansion and Icon. I didn't really like the podium on Icon, but it is promising. I like the river view of the Museum, but the renderings don't give me a great feel for the rest of the structure.

Can someone name me an example of good contemporary architecture 'built' in Edmonton in the past 15-20 years? Doesn't have to be great. Just good, solid contemporary design.

I came up with the Edmonton Research park building but I think that might have been in the early 80s. Maybe the Timms center and the telus center?

I was actually going to remain silent to let things cool down a bit, but what they hey....

Century Park? I am ALL over that design. No one here will know this, but I made sure that CP gots lots of attention in a recent paper on TOD development.

AGA? Love it too. But (surprise) it's the only project of this sort that seems to have been subject to some form of design competition.

ICON? Nice tower; shame about the podium. That being said, the only other city that seems to behind the other major Canadian cities WRT condo tower design is W!nn!p3g, so what does that tell you... Edmonton's still at least a decade behind Van, Cal, Tor & Mtl in that regard.

Without touching the older museum building, $200 million sure could go a long
way. Here's a very nice recent (2002) museum: the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth by Tadao Ando. More oil money! Our new museum is 250,000sf - this is 155,000sf. Big but delicate.
