The fame of the KWC lives on.

WATCH: What if the world's population all lived in the same city?

If every person on the planet were crammed into a single city with the density of the Kowloon Walled City, they would occupy an area the size of the Palestinian State, which itself is only half the size of the Tokyo metro area.

Hong Kong’s Andy Yeung wins award in global photo contest for drone shot of Whampoa Garden estate
Photographer with a big following for his drone photographs takes second prize in Cities section of National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year contest with image of housing estate he likens to former Kowloon Walled City
http://www.scmp.com/culture/arts-ent...-photo-contest

Quote:
Yeung said: “I drew inspiration from the Kowloon Walled City – once the densest place on Earth – which was demolished nearly three decades ago. Hundreds of houses were stacked on top of each other and there was very little open space,” said Yeung of the image.

This has been one of my favorite SSP threads (I mean, the first time I explored the KWC via it) of all time.

So fascinating.

thanks! I try to keep it going, checking in every 6 months or so. I remain fascinated by the KWC.

A renegade photographer got inside this lawless Hong Kong community that was 119 times as dense as New York City
http://www.businessinsider.com/kowlo...-photos-2017-4

Quote:
Kowloon Walled City was the densest place in the world, ever. By its peak in the 1990s, the 6.5 acre Kowloon Walled City was home to at least 33,000 people (with estimates of up to 50,000). That’s a population density of at least 3.2 million per square mile. For New York City to get that dense, every man, woman, and child living in Texas would have to move to Manhattan.

To put it another way, think about living in a 1,200 square foot home. Then imagine yourself living with 9 other people. Then imagine that your building is only one unit of a twelve-story building, and every other unit is as full as yours. Then imagine hundreds those buildings crammed together in a space the size of four football fields.
https://99percentinvisible.org/episo...n-walled-city/

And much of that area was occupied by businesses and factories.

I wonder if any Chinese Americans (or Chinese Canadians, Australians etc.) were ever former residents or are descended from former residents of the Kowloon Walled City, and have stories to tell about it.

there have been numerous descendants and former residents (most of whom were childrent then) that have, over the years, told their tales about the KWC.

is it posible to build that dence without bunk beds and every room gets light, without being crazy tall?

imagin if there was a smoked glass building that was a city like this, everyone would be out of the darkness. the people at the top would be hot though

build it in canada

Haven't seen these ones before (old shots, some from the days before the place became a featureless mass of 14-story bric-a-brac):

I am utterly amazed that the place somehow escaped destruction by fire.
