Air traffic continues to grow

THE STARPHOENIX AUGUST 15, 2013 6:02 PM

[...]

There were 117,500 passengers in July bringing the total number of passengers for the year to 1.38 million, a 3.6 per cent increase from 2012’s record number.

All areas of travel saw growth.

The Saskatoon Airport Authority president and CEO said some of the increase can be attributed to WestJet’s Encore service that added additional daily flights to Calgary and Air Canada adding capacity for flights to Toronto.

The airport is in the midst of an expansion, with the first phase to be completed in September and Phase 2 in September 2014.

“The construction is far from total completion; however, our intent has always been to manage disruption and bring segments of this project into service at the earliest opportunity,” said Authority president and CEO Steve Maybury in a press release.

“While our planned new food and beverage program will not be open initially, we are targeting for completion by year end with temporary facilities in place during the interim.”

Phase 1 will see a portion of the new passenger loading bridges in operation, expanded customs hall and expanded waiting areas.

The $53 million expansion will give the airport the capacity to handle two million passengers annually.

1.38 million passengers for 2013 thus far? That sounds a bit off. Last year YXE saw 1.326 million (wikipedia) pass through for the year. Still five months to go.

That does not make sense. That would put the year at over 2 million. Perhaps the 138 is for the past 12 months ending in July?

'Didn't do the math; however, I'd agree with a July-to-July statistical figure.

2 million, huh? The SAA would have to expand the ATB --- again --- in relatively short order.

July to July year cycle seems most reasonable calculation for year total. (~118,000 x 12months =~1.4million)

current construction plan is for 2million passengers per year.
With 1.4 million passengers increasing at 3.6%, on average per year means.. yep, the ATB will reach full capacity in about ten years!
too bad they didn't plan for say 15, or gawd forbid, 20+ years into the future..

Just curious, where are you getting your information for this? I believe the YQR website does not update this info on a regular basis.

I regularly meet with people in high places; plus, my occupation is in the aviation industry. (Just take my word for it.)

You're welcome. The RAA doesn't publically reveal passenger stats very often; however, the beat still goes on.

Why is YQR so quiet about their passenger stats? In contrast it seems like YXE can't tell you about their #s fast enough (I'm exaggerating a bit, just feels that way)

Speaking of YXE...

Passenger traffic up 5.2%

The StarPhoenix August 16, 2013

The Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker airport saw a 5.2 per cent increase in passenger traffic for July of the same period in 2012.

YXE Traffic

So which numbers are we going with? Why two different articles with different numbers? Bad reporting? Or confusing facts?

The way I read it is 5.6% comparing July 2012 to July 2013 and 3.6% overall for the year.

That's my interpretation of it, too. Either way, shouldn't be long before YXE is at 1.4 million passengers annually.

If traffic increases at the based average reported number of 3.6% over the remaining year, it would put passenger traffic at 1.374million for 2013. That would be enough of a passenger increase to take over 13th spot (Quebec City) of Canada's busiests airport in terms of 2012 figures. Lets hope for YXE's sake, Quebec will not have a great growth rate this year. However, looking at the reported passenger traffic for the first 6 months of 2013 for Quebec City, they are growing at a faster pace than YXE.

You would expect Quebec to have high numbers relative to it size. There are cruise ships in have Quebec city as an end/start point. Some of thouse are pretty big ships.

It's generally because francophones are concentrated in a smaller geographic area within Quebec, eastern Ontario and northern NB. When they visit family within this area they all drive instead of flying.
