Excellent sleuthing FW...

but I have to admit I became confused as I worked my way through the old Sanborn maps.

What you're basically saying is...

the two homes in the photgraph (shown below) are still standing. (despite the demolition permit)

Lanewood Ave. in Hollywood is lined by 'old growth' pine trees. To be honest...(I'm not entirely sure how old a tree has to be to be considered 'old growth')

With your conjecture of "100 years old," e_r, it appears you're just about right on the money. Look at the street trees depicted in this from 1918:

They're quite young, even the larger one on the left.

The wonderful line of mature, well-matched Pines on Lanewood should receive some official recognition and protection.

Thanks, e_r, and I apologize for not being clear.

The house in the foreground of the old photo, 1448 Temple, was torn down in 1926. I even checked a 1927 aerial to be sure, and
1448 Temple is gone. The house in the distance on the right side of the old photo, 339 Laveta Terrace, still stands in altered form.

The small house so in need of restoration, 372 Laveta, is not in the old photo, but it was in the neighborhood and I was struck by
its appearance. That house has basically been on the SE corner of Temple and Laveta since at least 1890, but in 1910 it was moved
to the rear of the lot, reoriented and had its address changed from 1462 Temple to 372 Laveta.

The tall trees, that you see in the background, are the Lanewood Pines behind the Carolina Pines, Jr. at La Brea & Sunset.

Pretty cool coincidence, huh.

Wenders, a NLA alumnus, used to live on Lanewood Avenue. He mentioned the Lanewood pine trees back in 2014. Go HERE

Coldwater Canyon is another street lined with mature pine trees. It goes on for about a mile. It makes for a lovely alternative to the 405 during rush hour.

I wonder if those trees are also 100 years old. They look to be about the same age.

The following two amateur slides were taken by a rail fan. (we recently discussed his slide
from 9th & Hopper that showed one, possibly two, gas tanks HERE)
He also took the slides of the Watts train station, and sub-station, HERE

"Kodachrome Slide, Pacific Electric, LaRy, INGLEWOOD, Substation? HILLCREST Bl. 1950s"

Take a look at this interesting building.

It doesn't look like a sub-station to me. It 'almost' looks like a country school (the upper half, anyway). It also reminds me, somewhat, of an old carriage house.
In the distance, on the right, there appears to be a rather tall house. (or perhaps it's some other type of building)

The seller was impressed enough with the building that he decided to take this second slide.

The smaller building on the left was partially hidden by a tree, and out of the frame, in the first slide. You can see the roof of a small house beyond the small building.
There is another house(?) in the trees on the right - - >

The seller also included this additional information. She (I think it's a she) pretty much pinpointed the location for us.

I saved all this before the ad was taken down.

Soooooo...I checked out the Grace & Hillcrest location. [shown below]

Google_Earth

I didn't expect to find the building (although that would have been great!), but I thought there might be some clues.

I didn't find any.

So now it's up to you sleuths.

The old Daniel Freeman home was in the middle of the Grace Avenue block, and probably is the rather grand building seen to the right in Hoss's pic; perhaps these smaller buildings are outbuildings of that extensive home...?
