12,000 STs is a little under half of the stadium's capacity which is pretty good... it guarantees that even if the season is not a sellout, there will at the very least be good atmosphere for all the Argo games and none of the experiences of last season where the stadium was like 20% full for some games.

Even if they only end up with 15,000 STs (which is a conservative projection), that still means that every Argo game would even in a worst case scenario have over 20,000 fans a game. Not great by western standards but pretty damn good by recent Argo standards.
Not really. unless you are directly referring to the last 2 season where the home games at rogers center have averaged 18k and 17K. but even in the darkest ages before that the argos were drawing over 20K. I would say if they Could get 20K they would be happy as long as the cooperate side of the spectrum buy up a majority of sponsorship opportunities and suites. I doubt the Argos business plan hinges on every seat being sold. They most likely want to see the high end premium seats gone. I was reading about the ticats first year at THF. bob young said an eastern CFL team needs 20,000 to break even in a new building, and closer to 25,000 in an older building. I assume he is talking directly about THF and ivor wynne. The argos were in a different situation as RC could have made them more money than anyone else in the league but the atmosphere was terrible so the suites remained empty. I don't suspect this will be the case at BMO.

IGF's roof structure is completely different. IGF has 2 free standing canopies completely independent from the stadium. Where U of P stadium has a fixed roof with retractable section. If any stadium has similarity to IGF it's century link in Seattle. Ive never heard of any future plans to cover IGF nor designs to replace/add to the canopies in the future

re: IGF and dome.

Misaki Park Stadium in Kobe, Japan was originally built without a roof and had one added for the 2002 World Cup:

It's been chosen as one of the host venues for the upcoming 2019 Rugby World Cup. There's actually three retracable roof stadiums being used in that RWC. The other two are Oita Stadium and Toyota Stadium. It's important to note that the latter two were built and completed in 2001 whilst Misaki Park was renovated in 2001.

As an aside Japan has no shortage of terrific stadiums.

IGF was originally designed to have a roof added in the future but design changes removed many of the structural supports required for a roof. The $$ was required elsewhere as things got tight. It is unfortunate because as beautiful as IGF is, a retractable roof would take the facility to an even further level. The cost of retrofitting the current stadium and adding the structural support for a roof is now a pipe dream. As someone mentioned, it would be almost as expensive as just building an entirely new stadium (hopefully they'd get it right the second time... ).

The new Mosaic stadium has the option to add a roof after the fact. But it would require the Riders to move out for a year which is a non-starter.

The cost for a roof is $150-$300 million more, plus additional operating costs. And the atmosphere is diminished. All for what, 3 or 5 additional events per year. I don't think that makes economic sense.

I noticed today that the tarps came off of the club level seating on the east end, looks sharp. Shouldnt be too long now till the seats start getting installed.

Interesting, it's precisely on the virtual venue where the misalignment appears quite clear:

Once people are in their seats and the seat pattern is cover, no one (well almost no one) will notice
This will be 100 times better than the Rogers Centre

Thank you for posting this. A few months back, I was arguing about this very premise --- repeatedly. The playing conditions would not be the same with shortened endzones. (As opposed to regulation-sized endzones.)

I actually don't mind the variation at all. Like the cornered off endzones in Edmonton and Mtl, it's part of what makes the CFL unique. Like the soccer lines on the fields of Cgy and Mtl, I don't really care at all, again because it is part of what makes the league and game unique.

I think it's pretty bush league and ironic considering how measurement based football is.

3 yards off the end zone is not ideal, but like the clipped corners in fields surrounded by tracks, it's a pretty minimal variation in terms of the imapct on gameplay IMO. You have to be really looking for things to complain about to get upset about a 15% loss of endzone real estate.

I definitely see your point of view, and respect your opinion. To me, the "bush league" feel to the CFL is what makes it unique... It's doesn't have the massive budgets the other major leagues have, it needs to cut costs where possible. If that means not developing the cut-off endzones, or finding a way to fit the extra 3 yards to the endzones, or removing soccer lines, then so be it... There's a reason why Edmonton switched to artificial turf, due to costs of grass maintenance. CFL is unique, especially to the massive NFL, and I love it.

Why so early in the season? If the Bombers are on a big winning streak headed to the playoffs people won't care about a meaningless hockey game even if it is outside.

Even though the Heritage Classic/Stadium Series at this point is about not much more than an opportunity to generate several times the revenue of an ordinary home game, it's still a pretty big event to fans... it would be sold out and well hyped in Winnipeg regardless of when it's played.
