Peter Stackpole (1913-1997) was one of four staff photographers hired on at Life Magazine when publication began in 1936...based in Los Angeles, he was responsible for 26 Life covers, most of these were of film stars....a representative sampling of his L.A. work....

Dona (pronounced "dough-nuh") Drake, an actress, at her home in 1942...I'd never heard of her, turns out '42 was her big year as she appeared in the Hope/Crosby vehicle "Road to Morroco" (apparently, she hooked up with Bob during the shoot)...she had to hide her African-American heritage to preserve her viability in the industry.

Stackpole was apparently taken with the colorful real estate sales offices springing up in the Valley, 1946....
One of the blackboard listings refers to a lot in a "restricted" tract, this was a reference to the so-called "race restrictions", common to subdivisions of the time, which limited sales to Caucasians...such restrictions where found to be unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1948.
Macconnell House, La Jolla, 1947....designed by William P. Kesling, who claimed to have briefly worked as Rudolf Schindler's draftsman before opening his own office at 1639 Silverlake Blvd. in 1935....Kesling designed numerous L.A. commercial buildings and residences (including the Wallace Beery house on Martel Ave. and the Beery duplex on Waring Ave.) before relocating to San Diego.
