I like their Victorian Revival taste in depots, but there is no mention of it in this interesting history of the property--a good number of pics:

Have we seen this house before on NLA??

There are loads of other pics via google

What a picnic!

Taylor and Stanwyck, Zeppo and Marion and Gable and Lombard. ....I don't know who the mystery woman is. ....Her 'other half' must be taking the photograph.

Thanksgiving 1936.

Peter Stackpole (1913-1997) was one of four staff photographers hired on at Life Magazine when publication began in 1936...based in Los Angeles, he was responsible for 26 Life covers, most of these were of film stars....a representative sampling of his L.A. work....

Rita Hayworth and friends at her home, 201 Veteran Ave. in Westwood....1940.

GSV

Alfred Hitchcock in his rooms at the Wilshire Palms Apts., 10331 Wilshire Blvd., 1940....Hitch is facing east here, the cross street is Comstock Ave....the tall trees are obscuring the north course at Los Angeles Country Club.

"There is a man, a certain man....What is his name?....it's Charlie Kane!"....Welles rehearsing his dance number at RKO Studios, 1940.

Dona (pronounced "dough-nuh") Drake, an actress, at her home in 1942...I'd never heard of her, turns out '42 was her big year as she appeared in the Hope/Crosby vehicle "Road to Morroco" (apparently, she hooked up with Bob during the shoot)...she had to hide her African-American heritage to preserve her viability in the industry.

Swim team at UCLA, 1940's.

For a 1946 feature on the post-war housing shortage Stackpole photographed this improvised home site above P.C.H.

Stackpole was apparently taken with the colorful real estate sales offices springing up in the Valley, 1946....

One of the blackboard listings refers to a lot in a "restricted" tract, this was a reference to the so-called "race restrictions", common to subdivisions of the time, which limited sales to Caucasians...such restrictions where found to be unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1948.

Macconnell House, La Jolla, 1947....designed by William P. Kesling, who claimed to have briefly worked as Rudolf Schindler's draftsman before opening his own office at 1639 Silverlake Blvd. in 1935....Kesling designed numerous L.A. commercial buildings and residences (including the Wallace Beery house on Martel Ave. and the Beery duplex on Waring Ave.) before relocating to San Diego.

From an article on the training of female deputies at the L.A. County Sheriff's Office....November 1950.

Wow! Looks like a few WW2 vets hit the jackpot here. Good for them.

'mystery' barn / 'mystery' people

EBAY

I don't believe the building is an actual barn but I don't know how else to describe it. It almost looks like a crib..but it isn't that either.
I have NO idea why there are barrels on the roof...and I'm especially intrigued by the flag.

I'm hoping one of you sleuths can make out what it says on the flag.

DETAIL

REVERSE

for search purposes: Howland & Chadwick, 211 South Main St. Opposite Cathedral, Los Angeles California

and this was penciled on the reverse.

Brilliant sleuthing indeed ... really ethereal.

But that sure was a long old walk to their front doors from Minnesota for Barbara and Zeppo when they hopped off the train.

A sampler has to with mining-- where ore was inspected for quality and a price determined. So I think the flag might say "Free Ore [testing]" or something like that. I guess the barrels store water for washing down the samples??

I do not see it in any old photos. Maybe I missed it.

Here's an interesting Los Angeles snapshot from the 'flapper' era. [1928]

Ebay

"DORTHY DEAN. A young flame of mine."....note the O was left out of Dorothy.

I located a couple of clues.

UCLA Register 1928-1929

UCLA

and in the 1937 city directory.

lapl

SIDENOTE:.... LLoyd Bridges married a Dorothy Dean that appeared in the 1921 film 'Finders Keepers'. ....IMDB
Could she be the Dorothy Dean that appears in the snapshot?

According to Wikipedia, Dorothy Dean (real name: Dorothy Simpson, before she married Lloyd Bridges) was born in 1915, so in 1928 she would be only 13 years old. And only a child of 6 at the time of Finders Keepers.
