Eminent domain. If we can shove a freeway through, we should be able to shove a pedestrian trail through.

The exterior of the Hale Center Theater is getting close to completion, structurally speaking. As for the office building, it does appear that they have broker ground.

Cities in the state of Utah may not utilize eminent domain to force the sale of property for a trail. The Utah Legislature in all of its wisdom passed a law that disallowed it. It happened in response to the battle between the city of Mapleton and a developer in the early to mid-2000's. To nobody's surprise the state was on the side of the developer and not the municipality.

I drove by a couple of days ago and it looked like they were pouring the concrete for the elevator core. There were forms up that were a couple stories tall.

Proposed sites

1820 W. Printers Row (2300 S.), » West Valley City, southwest of Glendale Golf Course, 3 acres assessed by the county at $2.5 million.

2411 S. Winston St. (1070 W.) » West Valley City, just south of Glendale Golf Course and just west of the Jordan River, 0.9 acres assessed by the county at $1.7 million.

2249 S. Winston St. (1070 W.)* » West Valley City, just south of Glendale Golf Course and just west of the Jordan River, 1.9 acres assessed by the county at $330,000.

3091 S Main seems like what will get selected. Was hoping for something like 90th S . It seems kinda shameful that they have 2 SSL locations under consideration and not one south of 33rd.

How ironic that with these five sites they only looked at TWO cites. It's like they didn't dare to go further south than 3300 south. Three in West Valley City, another one that is right on the border of West Valley and the other in South Salt Lake. Would hate to look at cites on the south or east end.

I prefer the 2411 Winston site. It's right next to a park and the Jordan River trail so people can get some exercise and recreation. Also, it's right next to a TRAX stop.

While turning both the park and the Jordan river Parkway into an unsafe area for drug deals, and camp grounds. No thanks.

It's in a very unused portion of the Jordan River trail surrounded by industry. Homeless people have already been camping along the Jordan River for decades.
This stretch of the river doesn't have any trees for homeless people to hide in. The park is very small and would be easy to prevent people camping out in it.

I see both points being made, but I can see that having the facility there would actually probably result in less homeless using the trail and park, as security and police presence would increase in the area.

I have had to go to a few of those office buildings fronting 201 freeway and have driven a bit through those neighborhoods on my way out. That is a pretty rough area currently. I could see the shelter help with the added police presence but its definitely not the direction I'm sure West Valley City is hoping for in that area.

This would be my list, in order of preference
3091 S Main St
Printers row
Winston St locations/3300 S

Main provides access to trax at 3300 S, as well as buses on State.

In regards to the Winston St area, with or without a Resource Center, now that area has the Trax stop that spot is highly under developed. Those one story, and the 2 three story office buildings are not the highest and best use of that property surrounding that station. That is a prime location for massive redevelopment and creating a fantastic TOD. The three story buildings that front 201 and that little pond could stay, as could some of the other single story structures, but a massive redevelopment could result in a true mixed use. Retail, office and light industrial/warehousing.

Or we can just place it on the east side where the rich live. Quit dumping it all on the poor.

Sandy civic center. I feel like if it went there they would actually manage the place and keep the population of the shelter to a reasonable number. These other places they're just going to build it and forget about it.

These are the types of developments that make no sense to me. All they do is add more sprawl, congestion, and pollution. The Wasatch Front does not have the luxury to spread all over. The very nature of the mountains and associated climate should demand dense urban development over this kind of garbage.

Mixed use that requires EVERYONE to drive to it. HORRIBLE! I am not at all impressed with CenterCal
