Unless I am mistaken; ROOMS are advertised on the globe light next to the stairs leading upstairs.

See the complete photograph [again] HERE.

.

Built in 1905, it had forty rooms for rent and two stores. It begins to be listed in the CDs as the Havlin Hotel from 1927 - the name it kept until demolition in 1965. It was one building up from the tunnel. Between it and the tunnel was another four story rooming place, the Crown Hotel.

You can see them side by side right by the tunnel on the 1921 Baist map.

Here's another view ( ca.1937) of the location with a side view of the Havlin Hotel's upper stories on the right. The photographer for your picture must have been situated on the opposite footpath corner.

We've seen the Havlin before, in an eBay auction that I won back in 2010, hence this combo:

And now I've got a big ol' bid in on that postcard, wish me luck!

While looking for additional information on the Havlin Hotel I happened upon this directory that includes the names in Japanese and Chinese.

I have never seen this type of directory before.

Of course nothing from that image survives except the tunnel. Every building as well the entire hillside, gone. Even the tunnel entrance has moved about a third of a block to the west. 704 W 3rd st. would actually be inside the tunnel now. That horse would have been standing approximately at this spot. Google has it as 703 W 3rd st.

Did Grace recover from her self surgery? Of course the recovery would have been temporary, since this was 1909 after all and she was 20, so she'd be about 130 today if she pulled through. But it would be nice to know if she made it to 1970, say, and saw man walk on the Moon. The most likely "complication" (besides hemmorage) would be infection leading to septicemia, which was usually fatal in the days before antibiotics. Just the same, hope Grace had a long life.

I was feeling the same way about Grace!

Let's hope this, from 1939, was the same Grace Ulrich:

Good find! Grace Ulrich seems a rare name, so it possibly (maybe probably) is "our" Grace in the 1909 story. In 1939 she would have been about 50 (she was 20 in 1909). If this Grace in 1939 was 50, then it is almost certain she is the 1909 Grace. Unfortunately the 1939 article doesn't give her age. Apparently the 1939 Grace worked (or volunteered) for either the VA or the Red Cross. Another clue. But I would say it's probable (because of the unusual name) we are dealing with the same woman. Thanks--you made my day.

I couldn't help but notice that Grace remained single. I wonder if it had anything to do with her traumatic experience at age 20.

mystery location. / mystery corner. mystery house.

"California RPPC Photo Postcard House, Street Corner View marked "Los Angeles"

EBAY SOLD, as I was writing this post.

Does this unique house (DUPLEX?) look familiar to anyone?

Note how the streetlight is extended out & over the intersection.

The back of the postcard is undvided.
..................................................................Undivided = pre-1906.

.

A closer look.

Why no street signs?

FOUR 'mystery' locations

1970s slides taken by the City Planning Office. (some are more interesting than the others) in other words - #1 and #4 are rather boring)

#1

EBAY clink link, then scroll down.

Nice VW.

#2

EBAY clink link, then scroll down.

Is that pig holding a giant ear of corn...or is he just glad to see me? ......*groucho*

#3

EBAY clink link, then scroll down.

For me, this slide is the most intriguing. (followed by #3)

I hope one of you can read the street sign. (I can't)

#4

EBAY clink link, then scroll down.

I'm pretty sure the street sign says State St., but I'm not so sure about the cross street. (3rd or 9th )
I like that burgandy Monte Carlo. It is a Monte Carlo, right?

info.

EBAY clink link, then scroll down.

GOOD LUCK sleuths!

Yep, this one's 3rd and State. The three bird boxes are still intact on the house behind the tree.

This one's looking down on N Evergreen Avenue from Pomeroy Street. I've gone for the 2012 image as there's less foliage blocking the view.

Yes, I am more than seven years behind in Noirish Los Angeles, but can date this great newstand photo. That's the October 1939 issue of Daring Detective in the bottom center, as I discovered on this great repository of classic pulp covers:
