I completely agree. This hotel, the new courthouse, et al are embarrasing. While I love the idea of expanding Fort Conde village and the area south of the Civic Center, I hope the city doesn't succeed in implementing its plans for the construction.

I do agree wholeheartedly. You guys who live there in the Mobile area have the power to speak out against the poor architectural choices. I don't have that power because I don't live there. Sure I could play the nativity card, but I don't think that will do much. Let your protests not be limited to this forum. Make them heard by the area's leaders! It's the people like you all that make the difference!

The hotel could have been in a Spanish revival style architecture with palms since Royal is lined with them.The color with a stucco exterior would have been a good idea.

Hey guys check this out. I'm sure some of you have seen this already, but I wanted to post it. Its a chamber of commerce video about the proposed bridge with shadow projections and renderings of the bridge from various parts of downtown. If you haven't seen it take a look! The bridge will be the second tallest structure in Mobile (215 ft), the part of the bridge that you drive on will be 65 feet higher than the one in New Orleans, 5 feet higher than the Golden Gate in San Francisco, and higher than the one in Savannah, GA. Thats pretty high.....I might be taking the tunnel in the future.

The new bridge has the potential to be a tourist draw.It will be the tallest bridge in the US.I hope it has interchangable lighting AT NIGHT.

Nice vid.. I really hope they go along with the plans to build this. Ah.. I was wondering.. How is the Maritime Museum coming along? Im away in college and havent been able to check it out.. Im really missing Mobile right about now..

Future where do you attend school ?? And they are still stabalizing the foundation the same process was done with the RSA Tower.The ground is swampy and loose downtown in others words ,so they have to do some extra engineering,lol.

Oh ok I know how you feel I attended A & M for three years and decided to transfer to USA.... Huntsville is nice but it is architecturally and culturally boring.

I use to ride around in the Twickenham historic district just to get an historical/architectural fix, lol.....That city made me appreciate DOMO and MIMO.

MOBILE, Ala. -- Austal USA on Tuesday got the official approval to build two more high-speed transport ships for the U.S. Department of Defense.

The company had received about $100 million in June to buy the diesel engines, water jets and other equipment for the ships. The remaining portion of the contract is worth about $205 million, Austal officials said.

The ships will be the fourth and fifth Joint High Speed Vessels built by Austal. The company has a contract worth up to $1.6 billion to build as many as 10 of the ships, five each for the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.

The vessels are 338 feet long and weigh 727 tons, can carry up to 600 tons of cargo and travel an average speed of about 35 knots, or 40 mph. They will replace smaller, slower transport ships for both branches of the military.

The Army has plans to build 12 of the ships, and the Navy's long-term shipbuilding plan lists 41 of the vessels. Tuesday's award includes one ship each for the Army and Navy.

There is no guarantee that any beyond the first 10 will be bought, and no requirement that Austal build them. But the company has said that doing a good job with this order should give it a leg up on future purchases.

Austal employs 1,800 workers at its Mobile River shipyard, and right now they are at work on the first two transport ships in the contract.

The company began work on the first JHSV in December. The company anticipates a June launch and December 2011 delivery to the Army.

The company began cutting aluminum on Sept. 13 for the second ship, which is for the Navy. The ship is scheduled to be launched in January 2012 and delivered to the Navy in June 2012.

The company has said it plans to deliver a transport ship every six months after that. Work on the third ship is expected to begin in early 2011.

Austal is also currently building a second littoral combat ship for the Navy, and is waiting to hear from the Navy about a $5 billion, 10-vessel contract to build more of the warships. If Austal wins that contract, shipyard employment could spike to more than 3,000, company officials have said.

LOL! Haha.. Very true my friend.. And trust me.. I have really been tempted to transfer to USA.. I came back to Mobile during Labor Day weekend, brought a couple of my pals, and visited USA (since i stay like right across the street from it).. And i would have to say that I was quite envious. lol.. And as far as places for college students to stay here in Huntsville, other than on-campus, off-campus apartments are very rare to find for a reasonable price here. So you best to believe I am paying a fortune to stay on campus due to a lack in competitive living here is Huntsville. If it wasn't for this school's "quote on quote" wonderful reputation and the fact that I have met so many great people, I would have been left. But once i get my degree.. best to believe I'm out of here.. lol

I was downtown today and took a few shots of the new Candlewood Suites. One shot is from N. Royal St. and the entrance side on St. Joseph. I actually looks better than I thought it might. It makes for a nice addition on the north side of downtown. I think they should have it open within a few weeks.

Drove through downtown about an hour ago. It looks like they started putting the 'surprise' on top. The frame for the building is being put up now. I was in a hurry and didn't have time to take pics.
