Mentions: Charcoal; some national chains coming in; the recent Vietnamese restaurant; Dat Dog coming on Magazine and quite a bit more info. That's all I'm gonna say before I get hit with a letter!

Burying all the power lines across the city would be tricky and expensive, but we should be able to bury the high-tension wires. They're a blot on the cityscape.

Also, I'd love to see commercial streets on Magazine, Freret etc organize to move the power lines to the rear of the lots on an easement. It's trickier since our city doesn't really have alleys, but it would definitely improve appearances.

Art Grants

Thought this was interesting, New Orleans is part of over 40 other US cities receiving grants for art related programs or renovations. They are receiving 3 grants out of the 47 being rewarded from the foundation. http://www.archdaily.com/243897/artp...cross-the-u-s/

I heard Dat Dog may be opening up locations in the Airport, New Orleans Arena and Superdome.

Hicham Khodr is moving Byblos into the old Nacho Mama's space. Byblos' old space will become a new taqueria concept.

Guess he saw the success of Rum House and wants to capitalize on that.

As much as Nacho Mama's was hated for their food -- I actually loved the local color of the place. The margs were good.

Cant believe the Times fired brett Anderson. Im still confused by the whole thing to be honest. A food critic in a city like New Orleans would seem to be a big deal.

Off topic:

Anyone think this concept would do well in New Orleans?
http://howdoyouroll.com/
The Brett Anderson move shocked me. Unlike some of the other casualties, he has a lot going for him--he's accomplished, he's respected, and he covers a topic that so many people care about. He has a chance to reinvent himself and potentially create a model that he can bring to other cities when (not if) their dailies are cut.

With respect to How Do You Roll, cool concept. I could see it working in the CBD. My concern with places like this here is that the labor force is slow. This restaurant will likely do the vast majority of its business during bursts at lunch and maybe dinner. If a franchisee can train its staff to become very efficient, this concept would work well here. Based on other fast food restaurants here, I don't have faith in this city's labor force to accomplish that.*

*Before I face a firing squad let me say that what we lack in efficiency we make up for in joie de vivre, but when speed is needed to make a buck joie de vivre doesn't quite cut it.

Oooo that's exciting. The only good thing to me about Nacho Mama's was cheap drunk food when you didn't care whether it was good or not and the $3 glasses of wine on Friday nights...I'd sit, eat nachos and drink druunk

Too bad about Brett Anderson. Hopefully another publication like Gambit or Where Y'At takes him on.

I suppose he could work with Eater. Gambit has Ian Mcnulty and I doubt these places can afford him. Its interesting that they said they are going to increase focus and coverage of food yet they fire this lauded food critic. Doesnt really make sense! Hope he lands somewhere, maybe he can follow Chris Rose's model?

Anybody know what is going on at the site of the old Hong Kong site at West End? I saw it being demolished yesterday, so I'm guessing somebody is redeveloping that parcel.

If I'm not mistaken, that's the location for the new restaurant/seafood market/bait shop/boat fuel station by Chef Duke LoCicero.

EDIT: I just found an article for it. http://www.nola.com/dining/index.ssf...ns_to_ope.html

If everything goes as planned, New Orleanians will see something in Lakeview that has remained all but unthinkable since the levee breaches flooded the neighborhood in 2005: a new waterfront restaurant.

The plan in question belongs to Duke LoCicero, the chef-owner of Café Giovanni in the French Quarter, and it is far from a modest proposal.

The restaurant will be called Basin: A Seafood Camp, and the 4,000 square foot dining space is only the grandest part of the plan. According to a press release, there will also be a 375-foot long fuel dock outfitted with a shop for boating supplies and an open-air seafood market filled with the daily catch of local fishermen.

Nope, Duke's is further down right next to Landry's. The Hong Kong site looks like something different.

Brett will land somewhere great...sad to see him go. But he's more NY Times quality. Maybe he could cover the South's foodways for NY Times -- much like Campbell Robertson's beat.

Or he could always start his own online NOLA food venture.

No mistake about it, there is little more than a pile of rubble that needs to carted away. I should have taken a photo when I passed by earlier today.

Algiers' Village Aurora Redevelopment

Algiers' Village Aurora to get makeover, Ross, Petco and Burke's stores

A proposed makeover of one of the main shopping centers in Algiers is gaining traction as developers are scheduled to break ground next week on the expansion of Village Aurora. The refurbished commercial center, located at Gen. Degaulle and Holiday drives, will be called Algiers Plaza and will welcome at least three new tenants, including Ross Dress for Less, Petco and Burke's, said Joe Mann Jr. of Retail Specialists, which is handling leasing...

The Plans:
http://www.retailspecialists.com/doc...ads/534_VA_new

I'm anxious to see how this will turn out, it's just around the corner from me. It's expected to be completed by early next year, which seems pretty fast to me...

If Gambit can't afford him, Eater probably can't. Their business is entirely based on pageviews, which means volume of blog posts trumps depth or quality. Anderson takes a few days to research restaurants, eat there, and then write to capture the experience in a review. That pattern doesn't produce a huge volume of content, but the quality is very good - and that kind of model doesn't work on free ad-funded websites.

The only sustainable way for Anderson to continue writing and reviewing the way he does is to adopt some kind of paid model, even if it's like a $2/month subscription or something, and then promote the hell out of it so people know it's there. Or it can be bundled with a larger package of paid content, like, you know, a newspaper.
