Are there any thoughts of a second bridge across the Athabasca? Here is one alignment I could think of, which would also provide valuable second access points to several communities with only single choke points. If through traffic becomes an issue, they could make the Abasand and Becon Hill accesses for buses and emergency use only? The new bridge would likely be 4 lanes (or built for that with 2 lanes initially), with the west highway being 2 lanes. The intersections would be at-grade intersections (or roundabouts?).

I didn't draw a Clearwater River bridge but if one was built to go east, it would presumably be 2 lanes.

The province upgraded Hwy 63 over the Athabasca River so currently there are three parallel bridges totaling 10 lanes (3 lanes each way on Hwy 63 and 2 lanes each way that connect with Franklin Ave into downtown). They also want to have a C/D freeway through downtown.

I agree that some of these communities need alternate exit routes; unfortunately the alignment you proposed mirrors the path of the wildfire.

I do agree with that, though because of the construction to replace the St. Paul Bridge it looks kind of messy right now.

You do get a better view of the St. Catharines skyline heading northbound than southbound, but considering that aside from the Ontario Government building, that all of St. Catharines buildings are commie-blocks, I suppose that isn't much of a selling feature.

That interchange between Anthony Henday and the Yellowhead Hwy looks pretty cool. Are these the largest flyover ramps in Alberta? I'm thinking that they would be.

Interesting article in the Edmonton Journal about the need for additional access routes for Fort McMurray neighborhoods; http://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-ne...mcmurrays-roads-push-on-for-new-ways-out.

The article also talked about the East Clearwater Multi-User Access Road (ECUMAR), a proposed road that parallel Hwy 63 near Fort McMurray and serve as an east bypass. It would include new crossings of the Athabasca and Clearwater rivers.

The single-lane Fort Nelson River Bridge, was moved about 10.5 metres in April 2016, to allow for a new two-lane bridge to be built on Highway 77, about 70 km north of Fort Nelson.

It will serve as a detour while the new bridge is being built (completion expected in summer 2017). Here, the existing bridge – a lengthy 430 metres – is shifted over a period of approximately 17 hours. The move took place from around 6 pm until 11 am the next day.

The single-lane bridge, with its timber deck and steel frame, was built in 1984. It’s one of the longest modular steel bridges built on site, in North America. Now in its 31st year, it will be replaced by a reinforced concrete deck bridge with three lines of steel girders below.

I don't personally have a dash cam, but here are a couple of YouTube videos from the Moncton area (they both make our weather here look pretty dreary).

The first one starts on Main Street in Moncton, then follows Rte 15 northbound, then the TCH eastbound to the NS border and then on to Amherst NS, a distance of about 60-70 km.

With the land transfer with the Tsuut'ina & the Feds completed last year, the right-of-way for the SW Calgary Ring Road has been cleared. Contract to be awarded in the fall with construction to start shortly thereafter.
