Yeah, these updates are great, keep them up! It's a nice visual cue to remember how close these buildings are to completion.

Podium city. Harsh, concrete urbanism maximizing people warehousing. Leaves Montgomery Burns ecstatic over the perennial dusk but leave Chief Iron Eyes Cody crying over the artificial Coruscant environment.

11 Robert, while architectural overwrought and potential for equally less habitable investor units, is a breath of fresh air from a whole block of smoke glass window wall.

Nice update SteelTown - lots going on in Hamilton, should be filling in some gaps I'd imagine. How's the condo sales there compared to the slump in Toronto?

I sometimes see 32 for 7177 Quinpool and sometimes 34. For some reason the municipality often separates out penthouse levels from the floor count, so they say something like "X floors plus penthouse [1-2 occupied floors, not just mechanical]".

It used to be common to say Fenwick was the "tallest building East of Montreal", which would annoy me as the real tallest is 132 m Édifice Marie-Guyart in Quebec City. This new building might actually be the tallest though.

I've seen penthouses counted separately elsewhere but, your post has made me curious about it.

Good stuff in the last two posts.

I did look at the units for rent on realtor.ca for Aqualuna and was taken aback by the "six foot wide" living room. Surely not all units are this compressed but, still more overvalued, barely livable closets even in a building that stands out as luxurious.

There's a building in Ontario with a fritted glass facade showing an historical building that used to stand there.. Can anyone help me find the building?

Well, there is this the building at 1 Grosvenor Street in Toronto, called IMMIX Condos, which has a ghost facade at its podium of a former hire hall.

I recall there's another project that incorporates this ghost facade technique too, maybe in Kitchener or London. (And I think there's an example of this in BC as well)

Here's the Kitchener example..

Yeah, I don't think he means the line drawing on Yonge but, rather the imposed building image on Young

Another Toronto example is occupied by an LCBO on Queen West. The image of the burned down building is imprinted on perforated metal panels.

Architecture criticism aside, I think most of the Hamilton SSP forumers are glad that downtown Hamilton is repopulating and will be more vibrant once all of these units are filled with people.

Le Fitz in Lévis (suburb of Québec City)

490 Apartments

Levis is the headquarters of Assurances Desjardins, and over 2,000 new jobs will be created with Davie Shipbuilding by next year, right next door to the project.

Some great shots by Marcadian of the new U/C Alpen Fury Coaster at Canada's Wonderland last weekend. It's projected to be open by the Victoria Day weekend as we finish installing most of the last sections this week and start testing the ride. It's insane how they've managed to intertwine this coaster with existing rides.

A few Halifax updates from Developments HFX:

North End. The red crane is for a 20 storey tower. Tall for the area.

More North End

Dartmouth bridge area visible from Halifax waterfront. There are many 20-40 storey towers under construction in that area, with some in the site prep phase now. Foreground has the HMCS Sackville, a WW2 corvette. Behind that is the Acadia, a WW1 era ship.

Marlstone, residential on one of the existing tower expansion spots that are part of the Scotia Square complex. Behind, the glassy towers are the Nova Centre, and far right is a more or less complete tower on Cogswell Street with mixed hotel rooms and apartments.

This one shows a ~26 storey tower on Quinpool Road that's far behind the foreground. There's a 3x30 storey development that's supposed to start in the next year or two next to it, so it'll pop up in about the same spot.

That seems to be the go to with mediocre architecture and urban design. I'm not convinced given the infamy of many of Toronto's already developed, investor residential districts that the created "vibrancy" from filling them is the one that forumers' are desiring. A 400 unit shoe box with 15 to 20 times coverage is overcrowding. That doesn't take into account being in Canada with a housing affordability crisis and a rapidly growth temporary population that the investors may turn the 400 unit shoe box tower into 1000 bed hostel. The saving grace is that it takes a whole district over one development for it to happen and full potnetial build out is decades away for most real estate development clusters.

I'm not saying that behaviour is tied to architecture or built form. Having interesting buildings/towers and spaces that aren't oppressively dense makes a nice distraction from the vacuous self importance of each progressive generation. It's the little things like separating from one's screen to pick up after your dog.

Press Block looks good. Varied, well-scaled. Barrington could take its crown back from Spring Garden over time, particularly as the latter is becoming seedy and filled with people behaving in antisocial ways.
