I'll try to find some time in the next week or so and head around the city for some photos

Looks like some significant (if not blurry) progress!

Hmmm. So they've poured a cast in place slab around the north core, slightly above grade. Supported by the structural steel columns & beams that will presumably have to stay in place. The remaining work in the parkade, especially the excavation, is going to be a lot of fun.

Thanks to Roquetin for the photo updates.

Can someone please try to explain how this could work? I know very, very little about construction. However, is it not common sense to assume one must pour the foundation prior to working above?

definitely the strangest construction methods I've ever seen, you can see a ramp were the angled structural steel is, what about exterior foundation wall?
maybe they do it after, now they r pouring concrete on Q-deck on main flr, beside hollowcore.

my only thought is they are going to work going up and down at the same time.

So strange

I think they built broadway about the same way, but it doesn't seem to save any time it just adds. Maybe time is not money for them, like the kid of a billionaire dad, just playing around so he can brag at parties about being a builder

No no lol. Very devoted and smart man - definitely smarter than our other developers that solely focus on wooden condo urban sprawl. No offence to other developers - my grumpiness is mostly towards developers creating misinformation and fake development announcements to scare out of town developers. You all know who i’m talking about lol

He’s a Sask success story:

This is very odd construction work. You would think there would be a basement.

Here is a question: Why is this taking, so long to build? I do admit there could've been a change in a construction company. I just wonder if anyone has answers.

All I can say is welcome to the Baydo Towers thread. Those are all relevant observations and questions. Unfortunately, it seems like we will only get our answers by waiting to see that they do next.

As for it having a basement - well it's supposed to have 4 levels of underground parking. How exactly that's going to be done is yet to be seen. It's certainly possible, as top down construction has taken place under existing buildings in other locales, so no reason that it couldn't be done as part of this build - it's just a very unconventional way to construct a tower of this type. I've already expressed my confusion for the construction sequence many times, so I'm not going to say that it won't get done, but will contend that this process is making for a very, very slow build.

Typical top down construction digs one floor at a time using the ground to support the slab construction. The hole is mostly dug here. The suspended slab will be assembled in the air and without access to the tower crane. That won't be fun. Should be able to make up lost time working above and below at the same time.

Only thing I can think of is the floors are laid below the area they're pouring now. Looks like an almost all steel affair for the underground parkade with concrete topping. Guess the big chunk of concrete they buried is for the elevator which will be the shear core. Will be interesting to see, everything goes faster once you get out of the ground.

Looks like they changed the completion of the first tower from 2022 to 2023 on their website. What are the odds this thing gets completed and actually ends up being the way it was planned?

A couple questions haha. regarding the questionable construction procedures going on.

First question. Are there actually lower levels going to be installed at the bottom? Or did they just excavate out the big hole to install the foundation? As it was close to bedrock or something. Or maybe the opposite. Instead of caisson they have steel columns on spread footing. Which would lead to the large excavation.

Second. Are they dumping earth back into the hole where that excavator is sitting?

It almost seems like yes its a potato cellar crawl space down there. With the stepped sides, leads me to believe there's nothing actually going down in the lowest levels of the hole. It's kind of narrow down the centre too. Seems rather expensive approach with the sheet piled outer wall.

Maybe third question. Those steel columns don't seem very large where the tower is going. But I'm not an actual structural engineer so don't really know.
