Leave it to Hamilton to force a developer to take a beautiful design and turn it into something grotesque....the original design was something we could have been proud of and now we have another heavy brick podium looming over our sidewalk.... Why do the few have sooooo much input

I don't think this is 'grotesque', but it certainly doesn't fit this development. It would be great as part of a different development downtown.
Plus, I'm not sure where these renders originated. Can't seem to find them on any of Lamb's websites or TV City architect pages.

I like the brick, steel and glass, but it would be better suited along King or Main St.

And at the end of the day, this won't matter. The same whiny NIMBYs will complain whether it's brick or not. They make stuff up to cover their NIMBYism, but at the root of it, it's just plain height NIMBYism.
They have so much input because they barrage their councillor with messages and they show up at every public meeting. The things humans will do to fight progressive change is really remarkable.
Imagine they put that same effort into actually doing something constructive for their community? Wow..... sky's the limit

I like the podium but the towers do nothing for me. Reminds me of the original WTC and has an institutional rather than residential feel.

100% agree this would be better suited on Main or King.

I was referring to the podium...I think the towers are fine at this site. I was fine when they were proposed at 45 and 35 floors here. It's 1 block from Main St, in the middle of downtown.

I love the towers, I think it'll do a great job of breaking up the brown/grey commie blocks in the surrounding area.

Just wish they kept the original podium or at least ditch the red bricks for another colour. I think black or dark grey bricks would be a killer look with the white towers.

I hope the buildings get no shorter than this.
I love the mechanical penthouses, and the overall design of the towers. Any shorter and they'll probably need a redesign.

I suspect this is a smart negotiation tactic by Lamb, but I'm not certain where these renderings originated.

He is proposing 2 towers identical in height to LIUNA Kresge and actually shorter than the George/Caroline St project currently under construction.

Zero chance the city wins any OMB case with such massive precedent in the middle of downtown.

I still like the adjustments they made. I think it'll still look pretty damn good.

Let's just get this built and move forward with other developments. I don't want to get hung up on any one particular development - I just want to see more buildings pop up downtown... of all different shapes and sizes.

Looks like Lamb just asked his architects to Copy/Paste the podium from his scrapped Edmonton project Jasper House and apply it to this project. Tbh I find it kind of boring and lacking the "oooh" factor of the angled columns and glass walls of the first design. Hopefully they use a really nice brick here.

I'd be happy if this was approved and built as currently rendered. But it gets tough to do anything legit big city when NIMBYs work at city hall.

What happened to Jasper House??

Is it just me or is it hard to watch that video without it buffering a lot. I finally got through it all and Brad Lamb hasn't changed his personality at all since he came to Ottawa, all bluster and big city personality, and ticked off a lot of people.

Watch your criticism of Lamb, you’ll be casted as a NIMBY with small city attitude.

I'm not a nimby but something about him really bugs me. His ego knows no bounds. If I was on his consultant team I'd want to front any meetings and not let him give his true thoughts on the neighbourhood, planning process etc.

Successful people usually more often than not have big egos. It's what drives them to be successful.

I could care less what someone's personality is like. Heck, we've got the Vranich family developing like crazy in Hamilton. The NIMBYs don't say a word about them.
We're not discussing whether we should allow these guys to babysit our kids. We're discussing their development proposals and projects.

And kudos to them and the others that are just out there getting the job done. No big fan fare or constant rounds of imaging. Let them get the spoils , or quite frankly let them get the extra density or concession (ie build something good and get extra bonus in second phase or next build, build something awesome, and bet the bonus even sooner)

Lamb said in the Cable14 interview that there are two mid-rise projects along Main Street that they're submitting this year. I am interested to see what those look like and how they evolve.

I wonder if he'll push the limits a bit on his future proposals, in light of his apparent scaling back of this one?

And I think charcoal or grey bricks would be more suited to the new podium, though they're probably trying to match with the colours on the Wesanford Place homes.

Would the city consider 14 stories midrise? I'm not sure. I doubt the DNA would.

Anything over 11 I believe is considered a "tall building"
