Not for a while. Construction doesn't typically begin during the winter season. I expect them to continue mobilizing the job site. Not to mention, they have to reach a % of units sold prior to actually building. This is very different than William Thomas, which was a student rental and wasn't dependent on sales.

Since we haven't even seen marketing materials for the project yet, my guess would be a launch in the early spring with construction beginning in the summer.

Passing by on the bus this evening, I saw that they've installed scaffolding over the sidewalk on King St.

I didn't get a photo, but I'll see if I can grab one in the coming days.

Is our shared Christmas present an early start to this project? That'd be excellent!

I believe this has to do with the kresges site, not 22 george. Cant believe hughson will be closed for close to a year? But at least it appears LIUNA is ready to begin construction.

Would not be disappointed if that was a permanent closure in favour of pedestrian link and or allowed Right House to open up that side for patios etc.

Yup I’ve heard the same.

And guess what, they are getting a deal on the closure, but some here think the city isn’t friendly to developers.

I agree. Wouldn't mind if it was permanent. Would really at to the street vibe we have going on on King William.

Nice one. A permanent pedestrian zone there like the south side of Gore park is a great idea. I think Hughson from King to the Hunter street Go station is scheduled for some sort of pedestrianization as well. It would all tie in nicely together.

Considering as it was this area was always cast in eternal shadow I am not sure that would be the greatest option in all honesty. I spent many a time waiting for the bus at that bus stop and it was always cast in shadow.

I also worry that a lack of traffic through this area is going to attract vandalism and taggers. It was bad enough on the side of the old bingo hall, esp. with the bus stop that was there. That little area always just felt very sketchy to me. Almost like an alleyway. I hope there is some manner of security once these big condos go up, like surveillance cameras etc. You don't see tagging on the courthouse.. mind you that would be kinda ironic if you did, what with it being a justice building and all..

Also right house is largely empty. I would love to see actually something go back into it but walking through the first floor its a ghost town inside there... what a waste of a gigantic building imo.. the most traffic it ever got was through the tim hortons on the right side of the front of it - and I think there may have been a barber shop on the left side at some point - but for the most part its largely empty - the inside has some odd facade areas where it appears its being used as offices - just very badly laid out imo.. esp. with all those gorgeous pillars inside. Love to see the inside restored to its former glory.

I heard the upper floors are entirely gutted though and its just one giant open concept room per floor. I'd also love to see the giant stone name of "the right house" restored to the roof of the building - that stone accent always gave the building a bit of prestige.

Incredibly surprised of lack of tagging on the RH along Hughson , and with 2x30 storey residential towers, pretty confident that there will be ample activity. Perhaps a change of ownership of the RH and old Woolworth buildings to Urban Core could breath some life into these old gems. In any event, with Hughson being closed for at least a year will see how much it was really needed.

You mean the kresge building on the right? It went up in 1930. A lot of its art deco elements were covered over - like the fountain motif in the ziggurats and the eagles wings motif under them. The only building left downtown with most of those original features left intact is in the pigott building.

The building on the left of the right house was woolworths. It originally opened in 1902 and in 1947 a fire destroyed the building, but was quickly reconstructed into the building you see that is there now. The original picture is thus from between the years of 1930 and 1947, if you triangulate the construction of the building of kresges in 1930 and the destruction of the old woolworths in 1947.

What I find interesting are the lack of images of the right house that show it with its original architectural entrances as we see them in our day now, which would have been when it was still a department/hardware store before the right house.

Taggers generally have a code - they don't go after what is currently being used. Once something closes down they swarm it and tag all over it - like the kresge building had done to it. They're like ants, reclaiming what is theirs, breaking it down until it's torn down. Some are rebels, and some, like PAC simply wanted their tagging to be seen for all eternity, so they found the most head scratching places to tag their stuff, usually at the top of really high buildings.

They may also go after gentrification attempts as it takes away places they squat and whatnot. Hence the issue a while back of them gluing locks shot and breaking windows. There was actually a paper on the hoarding after kresges was demolished encouraging people to do this to discourage gentrification and the raising of living prices in the city
