I hope to see a proper mourning period before re-igniting the debate on the merits of the Monarchy. When Queen Victoria passed, Parliament and other buildings in Ottawa were draped in black.

She was truly a person who took her role as Monarch with grace, consideration and respect. She continued to perform her duties until the very end. She deserves to be put to rest with the greatest honour.

JT just released his statement. I listened to him on the radio. He sounded quite emotional.

He referred to Elizabeth as "one of his favourite persons in the world."

I thought it a good speech.

Monarchism is a core Canadian value.

With all due respect to the Queen and her passing. No gloating, just don’t agree with such a statement.

Yes, the announcement has been made that the new King will be styled "King Charles the Third", which is important. If he had wanted, he could have styled himself King Alonzo the First or some such.

Odd choice. Charles I lost his head (literally), Charles II was ousted in a coup.

I think he's trying to rehabilitate the reputation of "Charles".

Which is why some people thought he might style himself differently.

I'm glad he didn't.

I am curious how the Danes and Swedes view their monarchy. Do they view the whole process as strange?

Canada’s context is somewhat different than them, I admit.

No. I give JT a hard time, but I have no doubt he realizes the significance of the Queen's passing, and that he will comport himself in an exemplary manner.

He will do a good job.

The queen is this iconic ceremonious character It's a struggle to see the person behind the character.

I think they are pretty blasé, I have never heard an impassioned opinion, pro or con, in either country.

When I said to my wife that "the Queen is dead", though, she thought I meant Silvia. So "The Queen" as a wording didn't point to London, unlike in a lot of the world.

I was in Moose Jaw when the Danish Crown Prince got married. Some Danish students and instructors at the flying school took the day off and threw a party to celebrate.

I think a big part of why we don't feel as much for the monarchy here is that we don't get all the holidays and honours normally associated with having the monarchy.

RIP.

For most of us, Charles is only our second monarch. Still feels strange to see "The King and Queen Consort".

Irish twitter is indeed showing its whole ass today. I try never to be cruel and really dislike it in others.

Just about everything here is at half mast, even saw a friggin' car dealership flag.
