Man, all we need is for a couple of these higher end stores to open up, be successful and the rest will follow behind. If he can get at least one or two, that will help the future of downtown retail so much. Did you get a feeling he was close to signing any of them?

No problem Sugit. I did get the feeling he was pretty confident in getting what he wants. The Towers is his baby & he'll do all he can to fulfill his vision. I just don't think he'll settle for anything but high end retail.

There will also be exterior lighting going up the towers. Placement will be every
fourth floor as well as the crowns being illuminated.

one of the most exciting things about these high-rise living proposals, is that finally there will be some lights on after dark. I work outside the city, and by the time I come home at 6:00, every single floor in these government buildings is completely dark. It's depressing - like someone flipped a switch and turned the city off.

I just drove by the jobsite and serious excavation is now fully underway. They're filling up large tractor-trailer dump trucks every 5 or 10 minutes.

Yeah, things have really started to roll down there. It looks like they have
started the digging on the Capitol Mall side first so pile driving can begin there.

Here's a press release from InterContinental about the The Towers groundbreaking. Looks like the name will simply be the "InterContinental Sacramento".

http://atlanta.dbusinessnews.com/sho...pe_news=latest

INTERCONTINENTAL HOTELS & RESORTS BREAKS GROUND ON THE INTERCONTINENTAL SACRAMENTO EXPANDING ITS U.S. WEST COAST PORTFOLIO
Atlanta -
InterContinental Sacramento will be the city’s first international luxury brand hotel.

ATLANTA – InterContinental Sacramento breaks ground on what will be the first truly international luxury hotel in the Sacramento market and Northern California’s third InterContinental Hotels & Resorts property.

Projected to open in mid 2008, the InterContinental Sacramento will be part of the tallest mixed-use skyscraper in Sacramento at the foot of the State Capitol. The InterContinental Sacramento will join its sister hotels, the renowned InterContinental Mark Hopkins, San Francisco and the InterContinental San Francisco which is under construction and projected to open late 2007.

The InterContinental Sacramento, located at 301 Capitol Mall, will be part of a two-tower, 54-story mixed used development named The Towers on Capitol Mall. This development will be the tallest skyscraper in Sacramento. The hotel will occupy the first 16-floors in tower one with 230 guestrooms. Luxury residences will occupy the remaining 38-floors of tower one and all 54-floors of tower two. All guests and residents will have access to the property’s luxurious amenities.

“InterContinental Hotels & Resorts continues to be in the must-consider set for developers and customers alike,” said Kirk Kinsell, SVP and chief development officer, InterContinental Hotels Group, the Americas. “The brand has five hotels in its Americas pipeline and research has shown that U.S. citizens are our most frequent guests worldwide, so expanding our portfolio in key markets throughout the U.S. to meet their domestic needs makes sense.”

One of the best addresses in town, the InterContinental Sacramento is an ideal destination for both business and leisure travelers. The property will be within walking distance to the Sacramento Convention Center, Old Town Sacramento and the State Capitol building. Westfield Downtown Plaza shopping center is adjacent to the property.

“Because InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is a brand that is known for providing guests with unique, authentic and enriching local experiences, it was important for us to partner with a developer who understands the Sacramento community,” said Kinsell. “With over 40 years of experience in Sacramento, we knew Saca Development and John Saca were the right partners to help us deliver the city’s first truly international luxury property – the InterContinental Sacramento.”

The InterContinental Sacramento will be owned by Saca Development and managed by InterContinental Hotels Group, under a management agreement with an InterContinental Hotels Group company.

InterContinental Sacramento amenities will include:
Panoramic views overlooking downtown Sacramento and beyond
More than 15,000 sq. ft. of meeting and function space
Lobby-level upscale restaurant and bar
Full-service business center
Exclusive Club InterContinental lounge with food and beverage served all day
State-of-the-art technology in guest rooms, meeting space and public areas
$20 million, 42,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art fitness center with indoor basketball court
12,000 sq. ft. world-class spa and beauty salon
Sacramento’s only rooftop pool
More than 60,000 sq. ft. of high-end retail shops and restaurants

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts continues to grow its presence in the Americas region. Recently opened properties include: the InterContinental Buckhead, Atlanta; the InterContinental Merida, Mexico; the InterContinental Playa Bonita Resort & Spa, Panama; the InterContinental Kansas City at the Plaza and the InterContinental Harbor Court, Baltimore. Currently under construction, the InterContinental Boston is scheduled to open fourth quarter 2006 and the InterContinental San Francisco is scheduled to open fourth quarter 2007.

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts was the first truly international hotel brand in the world, and quickly became the symbol of glamour, sophistication and success that years later, continue to define global travel. The brand is committed to providing its guests with memorable and unique experiences that enrich their lives and broaden their outlook. InterContinental offers services and amenities specifically designed for the international business traveler, while maintaining the delicate balance of luxury expectations with authentic local experiences that enhance the leisure stay as well. ^Nice find. My personal opinion is that locals will either call it "The Intercontinental" or "The Towers" when referring to the entire development.

Went by the sales office today.. The official figure is 480 sold. 59.3% !

Nobody said anything on this board before about the podium being redesigned smaller to allow more usuable space on the roof.

I have heard that redesigned the top of the podium. If you can imagine, the health club used to sit directly on top of the podium, completely outside of the Sierra Tower, or Tower II. Now, the healthclub has been moved so that a large portion of it (if not all, I can't remember) has been moved to within the Sierra Tower. By doing so, that frees up more space for the podium and now the pool area (as depicted by the new renderings) is absolutely impressive. Included now are various levels, fire pits, pool cabanas (similar to the Casino pool in Vegas) a bar, etc. I was very pleasantly surprised by the evolution from initial renderings to final plans. I spoke to the architect at the ground-breaking party and he told me much of the pool area had been modeled closely after the Belagio.

Actually, as I re-read your post Enigma99a, I'm surprised you described the podium as smaller. The way it was described to me, is that the common space has become larger, at the expense of the gym/spa, which has moved partly into Sierra Tower. Who Knows.

Although the common space is larger, the podium feature has been redesigned (I think). Well anyway, it will be nice no matter what.
