Kingdom Tower

^I see what your saying about the tiny upper floors, but aside from that, the building would be a huge accomplishment for mankind. We have to take it step by step. Hopefully in the future the upper floors will be larger but right now I don't think our technology is there yet. I don't know if we can but can we build a mile high tower when the floors are 5 times bigger at the top?

The massing seems to almost have a Las Vegas style which makes it look smaller than it really is. I don't like it.

I wouldn't call that proof that this will get built. A lot has to happen between this and the building getting finished, but this is a step forward and shows that it's not dead.

My impression is that this project is very much alive.

A large project management team has been formed to get the dazzling amount of arrangements done, before ground breaking can even take place.

Actual activities in the field may not start before this year is over. This just takes it's time.
A construction time of about 63 months is challenging enough.

I hope there will be somebody over there in the desert to issue regular updates.

That statement sums it up so nicely.

Who wants such huge building in the desert.....?????

But on the other hand: The site of Burj Khalifa was also desert in the beginning.

True, but being built in a pretty flat place, with pretty much nothing in its way, will really make it stand out. And heck it is not our money , let them build these massive structures. In the end it helps everyone as what they learn, will help the rest of the world one day to build up, rather then out.

where's the demand for this building? i just dont get it; these buildings in dubai and now here, are being build simply out of speculation, or perhaps pride of some sorts, but not out of economic fundamentals. if it was in new york, or hong kong, or even tokyo and london, it still wouldn't make sense let alone in a city of 5 million people. idk, its a cool concept/proposal, but i dont get it.

There is no demand. It is being built to satisfy ego.

^^ A common myth, but they also really want to put Jeddah on the map. Before its construction boom, I doubt many people have even heard of Dubai. Now it's a huge business center.

Dubai has a fraction of the available office space occupied. Putting a place on the map doesn't require building so much supply that the demand can't produce a profit. That might not apply to this building, or to Jeddah, but it's a legitimate question to ask anytime supertalls pop up in lesser-established markets.

Like others have said, Dubai is not a huge business center. It is a city with a lot of empty buildings.

What "common myth" are you referring to? Why do you think there's demand for this building? Is there any evidence that any of these supertowers are based on market demand?

Dubai isn't a huge business center, BTW, and still doesn't have widespread recognition, outside of skyscraper geeks and folks transferring flights to/from Asia. There's no evidence whatsoever that Burj Khalifa has done anything for the local business environment.

Simply really. Dubai is known for having the biggest / tallest in almost everything. It's so 2010.

Did a very unofficial poll at my university the other day. I asked 20, 20-28 year olds who have all had at least 4 years of University level education where the worlds tallest building was. 18 said New York, 1 said China, 1 said Dubai. Yep, that building sure is famous to the general public
