I've got a degree in history, but I don't need that to point out an historical generalization that is so sweeping in scope that it cannot possibly be true.
"The masses flocked to the New World," as he phrased it, for many reasons. Economic opportunity was one reason. Other reasons were to escape from religious, political, and social persecution and escape from the negative effects of war, famine and pestilence. The idea that all who eventually populated North and South America moved here only to own a single-family house is obviously false.
