Yup.

Just saw a post from Johnson Builders, Building the new Qwich'in community centre. They are flying in 12 Herc loads.

Now that Tuk is on the road system. Old Crow should be added to the all weather roads. mind you its double the distance from highway 5

Yk seeking public input on new aquatic centre
Published: September 4, 2020 at 8:19amMEAGHAN BRACKENBURY

The City of Yellowknife is asking residents what they would like to see in the new aquatic centre.

In a news release on Thursday, the municipal government encouraged Yellowknifers to stay up to date with information about the project as public consultations will open in late September.

“The information provided will enable residents to make informed decisions when completing the forthcoming aquatic centre survey, which will be made available later this month,” the release reads.

The survey will be used to determine whether the city will go ahead with a 25-metre or 50-metre pool, as well as other amenities the public would like to see included.

A new aquatic centre would be awesome for Yellowknife. That city is really quite impressive for its size and location. Having year-round amenities is super important, and modern facilities are a big part of that especially that far north.

I'll be impressed if they go with the 50m (Olympics standard) pool. Having been a member of a swim club, the difference is not lost on me. It's the difference between a full basketball court and just building a half court.

I think it would be wise to go with a 50m pool; as it would mean better chances for potential future athletes to practice without having to leave the territory.

Agree. If they go with a 25m pool the chances of them getting a 50m pool in the next half century goes to practically zero. They'll just argue why build a 50m pool when we already have a 25m pool. Build it right the first time.

Lots of examples of infrastructure in this country where that sentiment was missed...

City council naturally stated its preference for a 25m pool and no waterslide.

What the hell? I maybe sort of understand the pool part, but why no slide? That's th type of thing that makes kids enjoy/want to be at these types of places. Ridiculous.

Tax dollars for sports infrastructure has merit. Tax dollars for an amusement/water park does not. Swimming pools are an investment in the health/fitness of everyone. It has far greater benefit than installing amusement rides for 5-10 year olds. Besides, kids playing on a slide would just get in the way of people trying to swim and swimming is the whole point of a swimming pool.

And there's something wrong if we need to install play things to get a child to a pool.

I spoke to soon. The Yellowknife council ultimately voted in favour of a waterslide. The downside is they elected to go with the 25-metre option instead of the 50m.

Ah that's too bad about the trade off, but ultimately the better choice for the use and enjoyment of all age groups.

Possibility of Building a Bridge Over the Yukon River in Dawson City

Currently, Highway 9 crosses the Yukon River in Dawson City by ferry during the summer and ice bridge during the winter. During the spring breakup period, the crossing is closed and there is no way across. A permnant bridge was proposed in 2004, but was never built. Therefore, a permnant bridge should be constructed to carry Highway 9 traffic across the Yukon River in Dawson City. Something like this was done with the construction of the Deh Cho Bridge on the Yellowknife Highway in 2012. Also, a similar bridge carrying Highway 9 over the Yukon River in Dawson City should also be built as an iconic landmark for the city.

That ferry crossing over the Yukon was one of the more thrilling experiences in a car that I've had. The current is really strong and somehow the experience feels more like my previous experiences in a canoe rather than a ferry.

This has been talked about for 20 or more years. But it is really needed. The ice road has had issues the last few years.

I agree and this will definitely make things easier for emergency vehicles. Such a bridge should become a landmark identifying Dawson City.

'Don't drink the water': Iqaluit drinking water supply possibly tainted with petroleum hydrocarbons

CANMORE, ALTA. -- Residents of Nunavut's capital city, Iqaluit, are being warned not to consume the city's drinking water due to the possibility of petroleum hydrocarbons.

The city’s Department of Health has issued a do not drink water advisory. Residents are being advised not to consume tap water for drinking or cooking until further notice. Both boiled and filtered water are not safe for consumption at this time.

"Pregnant women, newborns and infants should not take baths or be bathed in tap water. Do not use tap water to mix infant formula," reads a public health advisory issued Tuesday.

Laundry, cleaning and showers are deemed safe by the city, though residents are urged not to swallow any water when bathing.

The announcement comes days after the city received complaints about a fuel-like odour coming from resident's taps.

They may have found the source. An old fuel spill beside the WTP. I worked on that facility coming up on 20years ago. there not many places to park around it. Maybe this will speed up the new WTP that was talked about near Silvia Grinnel.
