Does Toronto have more skyscrapers than Chicago now? Curious where the two cities stack up against each other. Seems like Toronto has been in hyperdrive the past decade.

If your definition of skyscraper is 150m+, the City of Chicago is ahead of the City of Toronto and will still have a lead when buildings currently under construction top out: 141 vs 127. By metropolitan area, Chicago MSA has the lead but Toronto CMA will move ahead when buildings currently under construction top out: 141 vs 150. Chicago in Green Toronto in Blue

I think many more than just those few are shovel-ready. Just off the top of my head, and only considering the big 'uns, the rest of One Yonge is shovel-ready. I wonder if they will start on the second supertall before the first tops off. Apropos One Yonge, there are those two mysterious 90+ storey announcements of a couple months ago, of which at least one (if not both) looks to be a supertall, if realized.
Also, the massive cluster at 2150 Lakeshore W. has been shovel-ready for years.

The market is currently somewhat dormant (no major starts in quite a while), but should pick up again soon if interest rates continue to fall as they are expected to.

Yes, very few new starts lately... but QueenChurch - 186 metres, 57 floors - just started, and maybe more will begin soon too.

From a waterfront skyline specspective, Union Park is needed to complete the waterfront skyline in my eye. it's mixed use but has 3.3M square feet of office space so it may be a while yet to be built.

According to the SSP disgrams section, in year 2000, Toronto had 10 completed and u/c buildings with an official height of 152m (500ft) or greater while Chicago had 76. So Toronto only had 13% as many. Now it has 117 vs Chicago's 131 which is 89% as many. Pretty big gap to close within a quarter century.

But it also goes to show how tough it is to hit a moving target. If Chicago hasn't built anything since then, Toronto would have over 50% more.

Catching a moving target takes a colossal effort and is all the more impressive when the target one's chasing is considerably larger. In 2000. Chicago MSA had 9,098,316 people while Toronto CMA in 2001 stood at 4,682,897. Toronto was a much smaller place. I've been around sites like this long enough to remember people scoffing at the suggestion that Toronto might ever close the gap with Chicago. Yet it's an inevitability now. It will happen some time 2026-2029.

I suppose it's time for me to stick my head out again and make another equally implausible suggestion. Not only does New York represents the next rung up but it's King of the Hill. Can Toronto reel New York in too? That admittedly represents an even greater mountain to climb but nothing stays #1 forever. If another city is to knock New York off its perch, why not Toronto?

It may not happen but it's certainly plausible. Toronto experiences sky high population growth and, by extension, huge demand for housing. I don't see that changing any time soon. Despite a flat lining population New York still builds a lot, but Toronto is building more. If the Chicago experience proves anything, it's that a huge gap can be closed with small incremental gains over many years.

The number of Proposals listed for New York MSA below is surely an under count while for Toronto the 451 figures seems questionable but over the coming decades it seems likely that Toronto will build more 150m+ buidlings than New York. Perhaps in 30 years, we'll be talking about Toronto pulling ahead of New York. I suppose I'll be lambasted for it but it won't be the first time.

I had Brampton and Markham in my 100m+ counts but didn't realize they now have 150m+ buildings in the pipeline too. I hadn't considered Oakville, Ajax, and Pickering at all. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. It's astonishing how the GTA is growing. Hamilton looks like it's on the cusp of going vertical as well. About time really.
