Toronto and Montreal are the two locations for this initial opening. Contemporary range means its not that affordable lol. Think $200 jeans

Zadig & Voltaire to Open Freestanding Canadian Stores



Upscale French fashion brand Zadig & Voltaire plans to open its first two freestanding Canadian stores this fall. The company has partnered with Aurora Realty Consultants for its Canadian brick-and-mortar expansion.

Zadig & Voltaire was founded in 1997 by Thierry Gillier, grand-nephew to André Gillier, co-founder of Lacoste. The brand’s name was inspired by the book by Voltaire, called Zadig ou la Destinée. Products are priced in the ‘contemporary’ range and include women’s and men’s ready-to-wear clothing as well as bags, footwear, accessories and fragrances.

The brand launched in Canada in the spring of 2013 at Holt Renfrew locations in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. Holt’s Yorkdale store also carries the collection, according to Zadig’s website.

I suppose, but anyone can slap a French name on their products and most people won't notice if it's a French or an American or a Chinese product.

Brandon is definitely due for a JYSK store, Saskatchewan has more stores per capita than any other part of Canada. Saskatoon has 2.. probably to get a foothold before Ikea comes to Sask..

In a few months Vancouver will have 5 stores, thats pretty fast and several stores are already under negotiaton for Toronto

MINISO Launches Aggressive 500 Store Canadian Expansion



Chinese variety retailer MINISO, which positions itself as a ‘Japanese lifestyle brand’, has big plans for Canada. The company opened its first Canadian store in Vancouver last month, and it could eventually operate as many as 500 stores in Canada, according to a representative.

MINISO is a value-priced retailer that might be classified as a variety store, specializing in household and consumer goods that include cosmetics, stationery, toys and kitchenware. It was co-founded in 2013 by Japanese designer Junya Miyake and Chinese entrepreneur Ye Guo Fu, and is headquartered in Guangzhou, China. MINISO's signage and branding appears similar to that of fast-fashion Japanese chain UNIQLO, which opened its first Canadian store last fall.

MINISO launched its North American expansion last month with individual stores in Pasadena, California, and in Vancouver, Canada. The Vancouver store is located at 1256 West Broadway in the city’s Fairview area, and more Lower Mainland locations are confirmed as MINISO begins its Canadian expansion.

According to Jack Liang, Market Development Manager for MINISO (Canada) Store Inc., MINISO will open between 30 and 50 stores in Canada over the next 12 months, with the potential to operate as many as 500 Canadian stores in the coming years.

Homeless in Vancouver: West Broadway gets a 10-yuan dollar store in disguise

A fancy sort of dollar store has popped up in the former location of the Kason mattress store at 1256 West Broadway. And by “popped up” I mean the shelves and stock were going in on Thursday (April 13) and two days later the store was open for business.

It even looks like what you might imagine the Japanese equivalent of a dollar store would look like, if it were airlifted straight out of a suburb of Tokyo and deposited in the Fairview neighbourhood of Vancouver.

There were billboards and a video screen on top of the Hard Rock building, but they were recently dismantled and are being upgraded to something which I can only assume will be bigger and flashier.

^^ Aww yes, I couldn't remember seeing anything there before but now that you mention it, there was several billboards there, like an Anne of Green Gables (CBC remake number fourty or something) only a month ago.
Building is going to have to make bigger flashier billboards to compete with Nordstrom & rest of billboards on Dundas Sq.

But we did have 160 Woolco stores. Not all of them became Walmarts, but quite a few did.

Nordstrom’s Luxury Stores Are Taking a Beating

Though the results were better than those of its peers, they did show that Nordstrom's efforts to expand in Canada, buy e-commerce companies like Trunk Club, and build out more Rack stores in recent years were not helping offset a secular decline in the department store business, from the low end to the high. Indeed, Rack's comparative success suggests Nordstrom, largely seen as a well managed company, maybe cannibalizing itself and training its full price shoppers to look for deals, too.
