Rimouski isn't even in the Gaspé(sie), though most people think it is. It's in the Bas-St-Laurent. Gaspésie begins a half-hour or so to the east at Mont-Joli.

Love it. I've been to Rimouski several times (just passing through, but I wanted to see the place). Quebec has a lot of small city/town gems.

It is all fine and dandy to pile on London....the place has a lot of problems. But lack of a growing skyline is not one of them. Our skyline is doubling in size. We are getting 40+ storey buildings, with a strong chance of a 53-storey building. Even that unremarkable tiny photo shows a lot of construction cranes if you squint.

Pffffttt.... Myself, I would even put Riviere-du-Loup in the Gaspesie. Anything east of the A-85.

Have to admit I do the same intuitively. We're not the only ones.

Next time make sure you keep Route 132 to cross the whole city and drive in front of downtown on the seafront boulevard, this is also valid for any MonctonRad.

I'll aim to do better than that. Stop and have a look around... maybe even stay for a night or two for a longer visit!

I like that idea lol. Rimouski is basically Eastern Quebec's regional ''capital'' for Bas St-Laurent and Gaspésie areas.

Dominion's and Woolworth's in Rimouski. Interesting. I recall both in Montreal in the 70s.

London's skyline is actually quite impressive considering the size of the city!

Quebec's "regional capitals" (having a university helps a lot) are generally fairly decent small cities by North American standards.

Rouyn-Noranda I also find is like this, especially considering its demographics and where it is located.

I'm not sure why, but I do get a similar vibe. Might just be alack of having much connection to it all with only sporadic visits for the odd concert, vs having went to school in KW and now living in Hamilton which both seem a lot livelier.

My sister in law goes to Western but has not enjoyed living there at all, so maybe that's influenced me a bit. She switched to all-online this semester and moved to Sarnia to be with family, and is planning on driving in for any classes she needs to attend in person for her last year.

She did grow up in Sydney NSW till she was 10, then New York until 16, then Halifax for a year or two, so I could see how London could be pretty underwhelming.

It is.

I have a friend who lives in the central part of the city. One thing that struck me when I've visited was how spread-out the high-rises seem. Maybe it would feel less so walking about the centre of the city, but when you look at them from the quieter streets surrounding the core it doesn't seem to be as "dense" as places of similar scale.

Speaking of universities, the UQAR have some neat projects on the go:

The ULaval's Medical education pavilion completed this summer

And the Veterinary education pavilion starting construction in september

These two new buildings are adjacent to the University and are somewhat related to it.

So I was lucky enough to finally visit the Island after not being there for 12 years. I had my drone with me so some flights were a must!

First stop is Victoria!

And I also had just enough time to get a few snaps of the Nanaimo downtown area at sunset.

Metro-One: great pictures, thanks for sharing

Interesting perspective from the neighbourhood of Fernwood looking towards downtown, a very rare picture you can only see with a drone. Vic High earthquake proofing and construction is taking forever, but finally nearing the finish line, probably getting close to 100 million dollars.

And what will it take for Nanaimo’s downtown to finally turn around and take off? It seems that Nanaimo attracts non-urbanites to a greater degree than most cities that size or larger. The city itself is growing at a good clip and they have a pretty good mayor as well.
