My best guess is we're seeing an incident that happened at (or very near) Sacred Cove, just a bit south of Portuguese Bend. The road there is always very rough because the land is slowly but steadily sliding toward the ocean. Palos Verdes Drive is continually being patched in that area; if you check the satellite view of Google Maps you can see numerous patches made to the road.

If there was a car chase happening, the Cadillac was likely driving much too fast to handle that very rough road, and the driver lost control. I've driven through there several times and I know how drastically one must slow down.

Incidentally, Sacred Cove offered the only nude beach in Los Angeles County for many years.

I cruised all along the Palos Verdes coast via Google Earth and saw a number of places where there is a rocky beach not too far from the nearest road. The old photos don't seem to offer any other clues. Your guess makes sense. Besides being a rough stretch of road, Palos Verdes Drive also takes a turn right there adding to the chances that the old Caddy, not known for its road racing abilities might have veered off the road and down onto the beach.

I'd never heard of these 1953 RKO films, so I looked them up.

Devil's Canyon starred Virginia Mayo and Dale Robertson. There are several films with that title
from the following years: 1935, 1953, 2007, 2011 and even a 2017 TV series with that title.

Second Chance is a film starring Robert Mitchum and Linda Darnell. There are also several films
with the title of Second Chance: 1947, 1953, two separate films from 2016 and also a 2016 TV series.
There are also these variations: A 2nd Chance (2011), A Second Chance (2018) and The Second Chance (2006).

There are some plural "chances", too: Second Chances (1998), Second Chances (TV Movie 2010) and
Second Chances (TV Movie 2013).

Based on this, I would not name a film or TV show either of these titles again!

Hoss, I looked in the LA Times and the Palos Verdes Peninsula News but found no mention of this accident.

If the people in the first photo are standing on the side of the road, I don't think the accident could have been in the Portugese Bend
area of Palos Verdes. Palos Verdes Drive is not as low and close to the ocean there as the road seems to be in the accident photos.
I don't see all that many dents in the Cadillac or much broken glass (the windshield seems intact), so I don't think the car fell very far.

Perhaps the accident happened elsewhere in Palos Verdes, or on Pacific Coast Hwy. up in Malibu or further north?

I didn't know Eddie Fisher so I listened to him. He had a beautiful tenor voice, similar to Tony Martin's. I have noticed that high voices in popular music are not appreciated for long. The general public favors mid-range voices - baritones like Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes, Ray Eberle... The same for female singers - mezzos-sopranos (or altos) like Jo Stafford, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland...).

There's another home that appears to have survived at first glance at 49 Maybery Rd. (corner of Ocean and Maybery) But when I looked a bit closer, its build date is 1930 - 6 years after that HDL incline photo. It appears to have been rebuilt using the same footprint/foundation as the original structure.

That's from The Garage, 1920. It's actually an Arbuckle film in which Keaton appears. Their last collaboration.

I can't remember exactly how we found ourselves at the Old Zoo that day - maybe I had heard it had been recently re-opened to the public after having been fenced off for many years, although obviously, a lot of folks had snuck in during that time. I went through the Old Zoo today while out riding my bike through Griffith Park, and from looking at things I'm beginning to suspect that the building in the upper right of the "panorama" might be the "zookeeper's house", taken from the opposite angle to the postcard.

I visited the Old Zoo 3 times last week, I'm not sure how that could be the zookeeper's house on the right side of the 'panorama'. I looked up aerial view of the Old Zoo from UCSB's Frame Finder and overlaid an image from Google Maps.
(Hope this works...Spoiler alert, it didn't work so here they are side by side.)

I'm leaning towards the photo of the little building(I agree with Oldstuff that it's a restroom), being at the old entrance(that flat area at the left side of the picture below) with the building to the right at the location of the current restroom.
